Lagos

Newcastle forward, Obafemi Martins is the first Super Eagles player to hit town for the Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Cranes of Uganda.

The Super Eagles striker, who arrived Lagos on Monday, told Sports Champion that he is ready to do his best to qualify the country for the Nations Cup in Ghana.

Africa 2007

"I thank God for an injury-free season after the hectic season with Newcastle," he said.

"On my readiness for the game against Uganda, I'm more than ready to do my best and I hope my colleagues would be able to be at their best too. So, that together we can make Nigerian proud," he added.

The former Inter goal poacher however, admitted that the team fell short of expectation in their last game against Rwanda, promising that things will be different.

"We all knew what happened in our last game in Abeokuta, as well as the need for us to qualify for the Nations Cup before the last game. I think we've all learnt our lessons from the past occurrences. This is a different ball game," he said.

Sell him to italia, and bring in Crouch on top with Owen

Don't you think Owen should sit on top of Crouch?  I think Crouchie's legs would touch the ground

sitting on Owen's shoulders.  You are just plain silly, my friend.

Martins shines in training

Posted on Thursday, May 31, 2007 - 09:00

Obafemi Martins © Getty ImagesOn the basis of his performance at Wednesday's training session, Nigeria coach Berti Vogts could be forgiven if he decides to temper justice with mercy for striker Obafemi Martins.

The German has been unhappy about Martins's no-show before Wednesday and sources found out that the striker is likely to start on the bench or not feature at all, and the former Newcastle man admitted as much.

"I am just here to do my best, we have lot of very good players in this team and I am not sure of playing so I have to give my best to see if the coach will give me an opportunity," Martins stated after the training session.

The Newcastle striker finally arrived at the team's Grand Regency Hotel lodgings on Tuesday night along with close pal Ayo Makinwa of Lazio after days of to-ing and fro-ing with team officials that put him everywhere from Newcastle to Lagos to Italy.

While his luggage failed to arrive with him in Nairobi, a throbbing headache did. But a full day's rest and recuperation seemed to have rejuvenated the former Inter Milan man, and it showed at training.

Oba shrugged off the loss of his luggage to impress not only Berti, but the hundreds of Kenyan fans who gate-crashed the Super Eagles training session.

Oba put his heart in every session and appeared to want to do that little bit extra during the training session.

In one of the drills, Martins left Sochaux defender Rabiu Afolabi mesmerised with a quick flurry of step-overs before hitting a trademark blinder past Chijioke Ejiogu.

But Afolabi was waiting for him when he returned for another try, closing down the striker with accomplished aplomb before muscling him off the ball and dispossessing him.

The Super Eagles leave for Kampala on Thursday.
