bodson
In modern football a free role playmaker is too much of a luxury. A team needs players that can function in several roles, this is extra important for central mids. Appiah - Yaya Toure would be magnificent!

NE5
If Owen and Martins stay and we sign Viduka that will give us a more than adequate pool of strikers to pick from in my opinion and while the whole team needs looked at really I think the one player that we are crying out for and have been since Beardsley left is a playmaker or creative player in that mould. If Big Sam can do his wheeling and deeling to pad out the squad and Ashley pumps a few quid in when he takes over eventually, I wouldn't mind us spending big on such a player. My own choice would be Tevez but that is out of the question and never going to happen, so who could we get to fill such a role? Well mate, I've been saying this for all of last season, and it seems almost everybody said we needed a left back and a centre half before anything. PS..including you 8)

While utility players are definately needed for squad depth, I don't think a playmaker is a luxury. Because the game is becoming so.....boring (chels-liv, man-chel fa cup style) you need a player who can unlock stubbon defences in a moment of magic. gonufc
I think we needed someone like Viduka first because if we can't score then we won't win games. I don't really see Owen and Martins scoring many together and personally I just don't rate Ameobi. Now we (pretty much) have someone like Viduka we should concentrate on the defence. Cronky
I normally think of the term 'playmaker' as being a central midfielder chosen for his passing - someone on the lines of Carrick. And I'd agree with College Dropout that this particular specialist role is one that is fading in importance these days. At the top level, central midfielders need to be all rounders, like Scholes or Gerrard. What we could really do with is someone in the role that HTT was suggesting, in that Beardsley / Bellamy position in between striker and midfield. A bit of a free role, linking the two. It doesn't need to be a player who's fantastically skilful on the ball - just one with the pace or energy or imagination to make something happen. Rooney's the best example at the moment of what I'm thinking of. I don't know of any top level player in that role who might be available. I wonder though whether Defoe could be converted to it. I've often thought he doesn't quite have the physical strength to play as the advanced striker, and may be better off further back. Failing that, I'd take a punt on Vassell, who wouldn't be too expensive. England's forgotten man is someone I've always wanted to see performing in a better side. Guest Alan Shearer 9
how have we gone from Beardsley to Defoe/Vassell? I agree with you about needing all round midfield players though, I mean where would Scholes be without his brilliant tackling attributes

I agree with you about needing all round midfield players though, I mean where would Scholes be without his brilliant tackling attributes lol but Scholes knows how to put himself about/closes down quickly and never sherks a challenge, despite being terrible at tackling, he also has alot of discipline in th role of CM unlike say a Kieron Dyer or Arteta (who can't play as a CM in a 442 in the Prem)

Guest Mantis
If Emre was managed properly, he should be more than capable of playing behind the front two. He has a lot of creative ability imo though I would say he has been guilty of going missing away from SJP. Saying that, I dont think any of our midfielders have been given any direction or role in recent times.

Guest Peter.Sthlm
I think Allardyce should go with some one relliable. Some one he knows can go straight into the starting eleven and make an impact from the start. Those players aren't cheap but if the club can afford it players like Barton, Cahill, Nolan etc should be the targets. If these players are to expensive or he doesn't want to risk the team morale (Barton) he should look elsewhere. Players from the Bundesliga should probably be less of a gamble then the likes of Riquelme and Tuncay since the league is more similar to the Premiership then the Leagues in the southern/eastern part of Europe. The biggest problem is that all quality players seem to be playing in the top clubs and therefor we have less to offer them unless they fancy playing in the Premiership instead of the Bundesliga. Berbatov made that switch, maybe some one else might want to follow in his footsteps. In the end it all comes down to what type of football Allardyce wants to play. If I'm not mistaken the only thing he's said is that he will be looking to play attractive at SJP and more result minded when playing on the road. To me that means we should be looking for a dynamic box-to-box player. Which is exactly what I'm hoping for that Big Sam will get during the summer. I can't see players like Tuncay and Riquelme going to Blackburn, Bolton or Derby on a rainy day and really dig in for a result. Which is what we will be needing if we are to improve our away form.
