Reading are optimistic Nicky Shorey and Leroy Lita will sign new contracts.

England international defender Shorey, 26, has been linked with West Ham and Newcastle.

Lita, 22, who scored three goals for England in the recent Under-21 European Championships, is reportedly interesting Sunderland and Portsmouth.

"I've held talks with both players' representatives," Reading director of football Nicky Hammond told the club website. "They were very positive."

The £6m-rated left-back Shorey has two years left on his contract, while the £5m-rated striker Lita has just 12 months to go on his current deal.

Hammond added: "We're keen to take things forward and the discussions will continue in the not too distant future."

The Reading director of football went on to reveal the club had been unable to persuade a couple of transfer targets to join the Royals, despite their impressive form in the Premier League last season.

"We've missed out on a couple of players that we'd have liked this summer," Hammond told the Reading Evening Post.

"They possibly didn't see Reading as the best possible option they had and we've just got to accept those decisions.

"If we look at what's most important to us, trying to keep our best players is of course top of that list."

says £6million Shorey so i think we could sign Baines for less

Id find it so weird watching Lita play for Newcastle, I used to play for Margate youth with him.

Shorey flattered by Newcastle/West Ham interest....

Shorey flattered by interest

Nicky Shorey has admitted that talk of interest from West Ham and Newcastle is 'flattering', even if the left-back appears to be happy to stay at Reading.

Shorey has been linked with a move from The Madejski Stadium after a season in which he played a prominent role for his club in their first season in the top flight and earned his first international recognition for England.

Reading are currently in talks with Shorey's agent regarding a new deal and director of football Nicky Hammond recently stated that the club are confident both the defender and Leroy Lita will commit their futures to the club.

For his part, Shorey is clearly content with life in Berkshire, telling the Reading Evening Post: "I've been happy at Reading for a long time now but we'll just have to see what happens.

"I'm going into the talks wanting to sort out my future with the club because I've done well at Reading.

"I've gone through the divisions with them and my time here really couldn't have gone better. Reading will always be special to me no matter what happens.

"I'll always think of them as my club, and in my time here it has just been success after success and hopefully that will continue.

"I got my opportunity with England by playing at Reading and that's a credit to the club. It also shows that you can play for a so-called 'smaller' club and still get recognised for England."

However, after being linked with both West Ham and Newcastle, Shorey has conceded that interest from two such ambitious clubs is pleasing to hear.

"Interest from those clubs is definitely flattering," Shorey told the Reading Evening Post.

"I've always wanted to do as well as I can, and when you do well, speculation will always be there.

"To be honest, though, I can never say never. Football is one of those sports where people move around all the time, but you just can't know if rumours like that are true or not."

In short: he wants to move, then. :D

I would have either Shorey or Baines because they are both really good young left backs. Shorey didnt rule out a move to NUFC but he said that he would be happy to stat at Reading. However West Ham are also apparently interested in him and he would cost around £6m.

we would attract players like shorey and baines and not west ham, we both have been took over by millionaires so that cant be a excuse for either clubs

i just think he would prefer to come here than there

West Ham have an advantage if he doesn't want to move his family too far.

Not too fussed with Shorey, wouldn't be unhappy if we signed him but I am not completely sold on him.

What makes people say they would prefer Shorey out of interest?

Personally Id much prefer Baines, I think he is already a better player than Shorey, although the latter is slightly better defensively Baines is alot younger and has bags of potential to improve.

Im not convinced id want bridge anymore, whilst he is better than the previous two, you would have the leaving Chelsea syndrome to contend with, he is a little injury prone and is getting on in years.

Would love him here, dont get me wrong but I think Baines would be a better choice, id rather be getting players on the up then on the down now.

While I haven't seen much of Shorey he strikes me as very ordinary. How many people were talking about him as a potential signing before his England caps? Same goes for Luke Young and plenty of other players, they get an England cap and their price doubles or trebles but they're still the same ordinary player they always were. People like Shorey and Young go unnoticed by many then they suddenly get an England call-up because of injuries and people think they are young emerging talents. They're 26 and 28.

Reading had a good season but I think they'll get second season syndrome and anyone who pays big bucks for their 'stars' is taking a big gamble.

How many world class left backs are out there and available?

FM talk really.....in the not too distant past players like solano, hamman and ginola who people knew little about if anything at all but when brought in were quality.

then again if we get linked with giego shaveback from fc porntown someone on here will give us the complete rundown on him

Better defender, good going forward and gets involved in play more than Baines, he doesn't make as many daft mistakes as Baines either.

People obviously haven't watched him play enough to notice his quality yet.

Second season syndrome doesn't exist either btw
