NSG Posted July 4, 2007 Share Posted July 4, 2007 NEWCASTLE United are still expected to clinch the signing of Brazilian World Cup winner Edmilson – but will have to wait until the January transfer window for him to arrive on Tyneside. Doubts over the South American’s fitness and wage demands have soured talk that the Barcelona ace is on his way to St James’ Park. But the player was flattered that United manager Sam Allardyce took time out to visit him and attempt to persuade him to ply his trade in the Premiership. And the fact that Allardyce’s powers of persuasion have already landed him the likes of world-class stars such as Bruno N’Gotty, Youri Djorkaeff, Jay-Jay Okocha, Fernando Hierro and Hidetoshi Nakata earlier in his managerial career has apparently had a major impact on the defender. But with the player looking likely to be out for up to another five-and-a-half months, Allardyce will hope to welcome the player on January 1. Meanwhile, United will wait to see what comes of a private meeting between Eidur Gudjohnsen and Barca coach Frank Rijkaard. The 28-year-old Icelandic international is willing to stay in Spain and fight for his place but with attacking players like Thierry Henry, Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi all ahead of him in the pecking order, the Dutch boss knows it is going to be practically impossible to keep them all happy. The vibe from the Nou Camp is that Gudjohnsen may be the odd man out and that would re-open the door for Newcastle. Should the outcome of his talks with Rijkaard turn out to be negative and leave Gudjohnsen with no choice but to quit La Liga, Allardyce would revel in helping rekindle the former Bolton and Chelsea star’s fortunes and help get his career back on track, despite the choices United already have in their own attack. If we do agree to sign him they'll take that into account. One of the broadsheets claimed he would cost us £3.3M. This is all conjecture but I would expect Barca to pressure us to conclude a deal now or not at all, because who knows how he will return. If he returns in great shape they won't want to give him away and if he doesn't they know we would disappear and chase someone else. They'll want assurances. I expect there'll be a lot of haggling going on if we are tying up a deal because this is not a normal transfer scenario. As for Gudjohnsen, Big Sam seems very happy with our four strikers so it begs the question where he is going to play/ Viduka wasn't bought to warm the bench and Martins and Owen wouldn't be happy with that either. The only other possibility would be that Martins, Viduka and Owen would form a front three with Gudjohnsen playing in attacking midfield where he played quite a lot for Chelsea in his last season there. Carroll will go out on loan, Viduka will miss the start of the season and wont play every match anyways. Then you can bet one of Shola, Martins or Owen will be injured. OWEN cant hes just a goalscorer also owen has got to try and keep fit all season as his injuries are getting on my nerves now has this club ever had good luck with injuries? For Edmilson: If we will get him on January while before that time Barca pay his wage, it's good. If until that time it's already us who pay his wage (is it possible? since he's not our player yet), then it's a bad move by Allardyce, considering he's yet to prove himself for us (he's probably not the same player again etc). For Gudjohnsen: If we get him, that's good, as we have more striking option. If we don't get him, that's fine by me too, assuming Owen and Martins stay. A gentleman's agreement with the player won't be worth anything, because if he comes back fine and they want to keep him, he's hardly going to beg for a move to Newcastle. Big Sam obviously has faith he'll come back OK, or seems prepared to take that gamble, in the hope that we secure a good fit player for a bargain fee. But to do that we have to stump up the money now. If we wait until January we could turn our noses up at a crocked player or we could see his price shoot out of our reach. It's now or never IMO. He did however say that if he was to move England would be the obvious destination due to his Premiership experience, he also said Eidur regards Sam very highly.
