Newcastle United Statement

NEWCASTLE United can confirm that it was visited this morning (Monday, July 16) by the City of London Police.

The Club itself is not the subject of the investigation.

If the investigation by the City of London Police, or the ongoing internal review of operations by the Club's new owners, show that the Club has been the victim of any criminal activity, the Club will take appropriate action.

According to eye witness reports in Jesmond Park West, one of the homes visited appears to be Freddy Shepherd's residence - visited at 8.30am. This is still to be confirmed....

I'd say yes if it was just us. The other two clubs suggests not.

Mort is a city lawyer who is reviewing our club & someone on here posted he is looking at all of Sheps files. Mort has probably found something dodgy on one of FS yellow post its & rang his mates at City Police. If not that then something scribbled in crayons on the back of packet marlboro lights could mean Dougie was involved.

Well Willie McKay seems to be the only thing to link these three clubs.

The BBC's site is particularly vague in their reporting, makes it look as if the club is under investigation. That's journalism for you I suppose.

:idiot2:

Can anybody remember the article from the Glasgow Evening Times just over a year ago in the wake of fans on this site asking questions about how and why we paid so much for Boumsong?

Well here is a quote from that paper attributed to Chairman David Murray relating to how Souness has helped the club....

..."I like to chat with people, through highs and the lows. I still have that with Dick Advocaat, with Walter Smith. And I still have that with Graeme. "I regard them as close friends - all three are coming as guests to my son, Keith's wedding. "Graeme has continued to help Rangers since he left by buying players. He is still a fan. Dick helped us by taking Craig Moore off our hands and Walter is, well, Walter. "It even goes beyond that. Graeme's son works for my organisation in Manchester and Walter's son works for Rangers, because they were all pals with my two sons. "I'm a great believer that you work together, and that is why I set a lot of store by loyalty - both in business and football."

Graeme was helping Rangers when he bought Boumsong?  When we all thought it was we needed a Centre Half

I remember reading that at the time too

With him being a city lawyer & City Of London Polcie being the specialist force in city crime paths may/would of crossed,friendships/contacts/bonds formed. If he hasnt got contacts I would imagine a colleague at Freshfields would.

The club accounts, with Shepherd's signature on them, includes in the "Internal Control" (that works at so many levels  ;D ) section

"The group has established an internal financial control framework that is appropriate ..... designed to manage rather than eliminate risk ..... includes .... clearly laid down authorization levels for all types of expenditure and financial commitments ...... the board has considered the need for internal audit function, but has decided that ....such a function is not currently considered appropriate"

So it will have been Souness's fault then  :nope:

Can it be that simple? If you had asked any Newcastle supporter which transfer they would query the most following the Panorama programme we would all say without hesitation - Boumsong.

SBR didn't think he was good enough on a free.

Rangers sign Boumsong for nowt

Souness becomes our manager

We spend 8M on Boumsong shortly afterwards

Boumsong is crap

This made either SBR or Souness a terrible judge of a player or suggested that the latter may have had an agenda. You have to assume that Souness does know a good footballer when he sees one.

I hope our private thoughts are true as it will explain quite a bit of the mess he made with the squad & wipe that smug look off his face when he talks about his time at the club. I felt taken for an idiot at the time.

To what extent, if any, FF is implicated is anyones guess but he must be sweating.

Now do we know that for sure, or was it more a case of us already having Woodgate he felt he didn't need him. Also, the year before he went to Rangers, Houllier tried taking him to Liverpool for around £6m.

Rangers sign Boumsong for nowt

He was a Bosman...same with Ballack, Ben Haim, Geremi...

Souness becomes our manager

And first thing he realises is the sh*t we've been left in in terms of defenders by the time he came in.

We spend 8M on Boumsong shortly afterwards

Highly-rated at the time, would have had 4-5 years left on his contract, and as already mentioned, Liverpool nearly spent £6m on him when he only had a year left to run on his contract.

Boumsong is crap

At least there's something we can agree on. ;)

When we bought Bumsong, there were LOTS of people on message boards telling people how good he was - and I mean LOTS.

Of course, it may have been on the basis that he was a foreigner and cost a lot of money - ala Luque - but that is true.

Hmmm: -

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/toptens/story/0,14034,1078421,00.html

Ali Dia

"The Jeffrey Archer of Premiership imports arrived at Southampton in 1996 after convincing then-manager Graeme Souness that he was a top quality 30-year-old Senegalese striker with 13 international caps, carrying a recommendation from former Paris St Germain teammate George Weah. Plainly, he wasn't - but Souness's curiosity got the better of him. Dia was signed and brought on as a substitute against Leeds. After a superbly inept 53 minutes he was brought off again, and, 14 days after agreeing it, his contract was cancelled. 'I don't feel I have been duped in the slightest,' explained Souness afterwards. 'That's just the way the world is these days.' From Southampton, the japester joined non-league Gateshead, where he was transfer-listed in February 1997. He hasn't been heard of since."

but they weren't Rangers fans.

They're probably the same people excited about Rozenhal. Best not to make a judgement  until they've been seen in action, otherwise  there'll always be someone to say "told you so".

To be fair I lived in Glasgow at the time and every Rangers fan I spoke to was raving about Boumsong, and they were dissapointed to lose him even at the price we paid.

He was also highly rated with us at first, I believe he was in the top 3 of 'players you'd least like to leave' in the Mag end of season poll.

Was there now ?

I remember an accountant backing his financial ruin of the club from the day he came until the day he left ?
