Owen: I'm Up For Villa Date

MICHAEL Owen came through 60 minutes of his comeback match and afterwards declared himself and fit and available for Aston Villa on Saturday.

Newcastle United's record signing missed the bulk of the pre-season and the opening day 3-1 win at Bolton with a niggling thigh complaint.

But, after a run-out at Kingston Park against Unibond outfit Newvcastle Blue Star, the 27-year-old told Newcastle World TV in an exclsuive interview that he is now raring to go again.

"I feel fine, it was only a small injury, a little niggle.

"It had me out for a couple of weeks but I've trained the last four or five days and I was confident I'd be fine and it was good to get back out on the pitch.

"It's a little frustrating to have missed some of the pre-season games but I've been able to do all the running work.

"It's only in the last couple of weeks when I might've missed a little bit of football and tactical work so I don't think I've missed much in terms of fitness and strength which is crucial and I've still been working hard in the gym.

"As a player you always look forward to the first game of the season and it's a little frustrating if you miss it.

"I probably vould've played a part against Bolton but I'm pleased we took the decision not to play. It means I've only missed one game and now I'm available again.

"I'd been doing a bit of shooting practice when I just felt my thigh a little and probably hit one ball too many.

"I'm available again now and I feel fit and playing again was great. I'll train for the next few days and I'll be available for Saturday."

That Blue Star player pictured ( don't know any of their names  ) chased after that ball and cleared it off the line in a manner not dissimilar to Martins first goal against Bolton.

Sam was there, he arrived just 7 or 8 minutes before kick off. Nice car, some sort of Bentley. I was just getting a ticket as he pulled up about 10 yards away.

Pretty sure Ameobi's first goal was meant to be a pass to Owen (who was clear in space) that was misdirected. About three minutes after that Owen laid a ball off to him when he was in loads of space and he had loads of time too. He bent it out with a looping soft shot which even if he'd kept straight might only have met the post. Saw Owen having words with him after that, not nasty like.

Troisi was very industrious and always looking for the ball, should prove to be a good player if he keeps developing. Kasanga also looked lively at times, skipping past some challenges nimbly and with pace.

Dyer played in fits and starts, much like any other game. As often as not he took it too far though, running into trouble when an earlier lay off would have potentially been far more productive. The only booing I heard was when his name was called out right at the beginning and it wasn't many and quickly died. More a token gesture by some fanatics than anything else. Maybe it was the eggers!

Cacapa, couldn't really judge him. Sat deeper than the rest often during the first half with Ramage doing most of the clearing up. Ramage actually looked quite good at that level.

They played a 4-4-2 and I know it wasn't a 'real' game but it was not a patch on the Bolton game. Hope they were taking it easy because on that showing Blue Star were definitely not there just to make up the numbers. Not many players looking for space, at least not with any real conviction. Good enough warm up.

Kazenga is Lomana's cousin, not his brother or nephew.

There has been some confusion about LuaLua's relationship to United starlet Kazenga LuaLua, but the Pompey striker insists: "He is my brother and I am so pleased that I have heard he is doing well at Newcastle.

"Apart from having a kick-about with him in the garden, I have never actually seen him play.

And isn't their cousin an U14s academy player?

Owen will play when we play 4-4-2. In spite of our success at Bolton, i anticipate we'll start more games with a 4-4-2 than a 4-5-1*, and Owen will play then. Either way, it'll be a rather splendid situation to be able to bring on a Martins or a Milner or a Smith and switch the formation at the drop of a hat, depending on the state of play.

*What's great is that we have a versatile enough squad that our players will fit nicely into either formation.

Can we get something straight, the team against Bolton played a 4-3-3 when attacking and a 4-4-2 when defending, they didn't play 4-5-1 until Shola came on when Same obviously decided to shut the game down.

It might seem like a slight difference but infact it was refreshing to watch because a lot of managers are calling their formation a 4-3-3 when in fact it's nothing more than a 4-5-1 stifling the life out of the opposition.

Shola’s delight at double blast

NEWCASTLE United hitman Shola Ameobi has revealed he feels like a new player with his hip injury nightmare now a thing of the past.

Ameobi bagged a brace against newly-installed UniBond League side Newcastle Blue Star in front of 3,600 people at their new Kingston Park home, and also took his pre-season tally to six after doubles against Gateshead and Hartlepool.

The Academy product must have caught the eye of watching boss Sam Allardyce on the night – even though the emphasis was on Michael Owen who returned from a thigh injury to play an hour against Andy Gowens and Bob Morton’s Blue Star.

United also fielded troubled star Kieron Dyer – who lasted 70 minutes – and Brazilian new boy Cacapa, who also shone during the 2-0 victory.

Ameobi told the Chronicle: “I am delighted with two goals again.

“For me it is all about match fitness and getting back into contention.

“Goals are important for my confidence, but I am just happy to be back out there.”

And speaking on his hip problem, Shola added: “It is the first time I haven’t felt it now.

“It has been a long road and I am finally over that now and I can just look forward to playing for Newcastle.

“I was happy to get through unscathed again and now I am ready for Aston Villa.”

United were happy enough with the victory against the UniBond side, who begin their campaign on August 22 at home to Wakefield, as they start their ambitious bid to reach the Football League.

And after scoring a goal in each half, Ameobi was impressed.

He added: “Blue Star equipped themselves very well and they were hard to break down.

“I didn’t think it would be as tough as it was, but it just shows you it is a big game for these lads.

“They did themselves proud and good luck to them for the new season.”

Owen actually came close to scoring in both halves last night, but was denied by two clearances on the line by former Toon kids Ben Webster and Chris Carr respectively.

Blue Star – who also had ex-United youngsters Kris Gate, Marc Walton and Dean Critchlow on show – deserved a goal out of the night after a good solid workout, but their luck in front of goal wasn’t with them.

And the determination of Ameobi to catch the eye dented their hopes on a humid evening.

On 43 minutes he latched on to a ball into the 18-yard area from Kazenga LuaLua before squeezing home from a tight angle.

And a minute after Owen had been replaced, Ameobi curled one in off the post from another pass by the younger brother of former Toon ace Lomana LuaLua.

However, the 2-0 defeat couldn’t spoil the night of the 1978 FA Vase Wembley winners.

And director of football Morton said today: “It was great night and sets us up nicely for the UniBond League.

“We had a very good crowd of 3,600 here at Kingston Park last night, and although a lot of them turned up to see Michael Owen, they know now that there is an ambitious non-league club here.

“And during the season we look forward to welcoming them back.”

United: Forster, Huntington (Francis 77), Edgar, Pattison, Ramage, Cacapa, Troisi (McLaughlin 70), Dyer (Godsmark 70), Ameobi (Donaldson 77), Owen (Lough 59), LuaLua (Ferguson 85),

Subs not used: Cook, Morris, Danquah.

Blue Star: Lowsen, Webster (Gate 46), Scott (Davies 46), Carr, Townsley, Hutchinson (Nicholson 62), McTiernan (Morton 62), Nicholls (Bainbridge 62), Novak (Walton 62), Critchlow (Robinson 46), Pringle (Emms 46).

Both have looked good pre season. Troisi just needs to get his Cordone hair cut.  :coolsmiley:

Makes much more sense to let the prospect go out on loan and get regular first team football and let the experienced player sit on the bench for when he is needed.

Good game and result to get some of the players minutes like Owen and Cacapa which gives Big Sam more options available to him. Quite happy to see Martins and Viduka start again against Villa with Owen on the bench who needs to build fitness and proves he is injury free before getting into the first team. He hasnt been able to play two games in a row since coming back from that big injury but is still a quality player.

Except for the three in a row he played for us last season

Figure of speech?

"He hasnt been able to play two games in a row since coming back from that big injury."

That's a statement, not a figure of speech, IMO.Maybe if he said "for us" or "this year" instead of "from that big injury".

You're picking on me today, anyway. :(
