When was this, out of curiosity? I remember seeing loads of reports and footage when they first started pushing for it. There was even a video displaying all sorts of shots, ball positions etc... this was years ago already and it didn't get anything wrong. Was in about 2007, when Adidas were trying stuff out. This might be the video you mean- it was done a few months after the trial at Middlesbrough (don't think it counts as a football clip). There were a few problems with it going off at random moments (and random issues like spare balls on the touchline setting it off), probably more accurate than human error though.

I was involved in a trial of this technology at Middlesbrough- it's nearly there in terms of development, but as someone said, it's all being developed by Adidas. Permenant linesmen should be in place int he meantime, but sometimes it is genuinely extremely close; look at Italy-Slovakia. You need a a system like Hawkeye in tennis which can take a still frame of it.

Leagues can't act without the backing of FIFA, they set the rules worldwide. It really needs to be looked into for 2014, even if it's only used at the World Cup. I know that there were some problems with the technology when they trialed it recently, but it should be upto scratch by then. In the meantime, we need officials on the goalline as in the Europa League, goalline decisions are nearly impossible for assistants on the move.

Why do you say that the referee was terrible? I thought he did a good job handling most of the bad challenges and dealing with the attitude of Brawn over Brain. I especially liked that he booked Tiago for diving. Yes, he might have done something more when the defender brought down the ball with his arm when Ronaldo could have broken free in midfield, but that might have swung the game unnecessarily. This was a boring game with little real desire to win as neither team needed a result, but I thought the referee was pretty good in this game. Agreed, thought he was excellent in a very tricky game.

That's the most patronising, ill-informed rubbish I've ever seen on here. Making insights into national culture on a horn?! Football has popular in Africa for over a century, it has a far better defined and purer footballing culture than some of the Americanised bollocks that has come over to Europe in the past few years. Read over that again, it could easily have come from a neo-colonialist. Backwards Africans and enlighted Westerners? You seem like the uncultured one here. How has this issue shown anything about the tournament? Everything else about the tournament has ran absolutely smoothly, has it not? Or is a plastic horn that important to your conception of a tournament?

Have you never noticed that World Cup's often take on a flavour of the host country? How would you react if other countries tried to alter the way that English fans celebrated in an English World Cup? He's Irish. Same applies- we can't dictate the customs of the host country. How about if Arab countries tried asked European fans to cover up? Or asked fans not to sing chants with swear words in?
