You could do this with any player, chairman, manager, pundit or journalist in football though. It's bullshit to criticise Hughton for what he's been saying. He's in a no-win situation. Hughton is doing a very difficult job. He's been told not to talk about deals (probably on pain of death knowing Ashley), the club are extremely paranoid about the press and he's got to get on trying to placate the hacks, manage a football team and source potential signings on a budget of f*** all. Exactly, and no surprise that journos are having a go at him, the club has already stated they won't be giving anything away on transfers. That's understandable though. He's making their jobs harder so naturally they're gonna turn on him. To be fair I don't take Bird's statement as a sign they're turning on him.

I thought the statement said only he 'the manager' could comment on team situations, including transfers? It said a lot of thing but it seems fairly obvious he's been told to say nowt. Just look at the Campbell deal and Ben Arfa saga.

What would that achieve, apart from see Joe Kinnear appointed as manager again?

that was quick It's a massive blow for them. He's a fantastic defender and had a great WC, bar THAT penalty. Still... he is a good defender but bloody hell he isnt half accident prone He's got a problem with his back which bizarrely means he's constantly on the verge of pulling his hamstrings. There is an operation to cure his bad back but he'd have to miss 18 months and there's a large chance it would make the problem worse and end his career. Poor sod.

Simon Bird on Twitter - Leaving #nufc pressa: the least illuminating pressa I've ever been too. Impossible to extract any info or colour from hughton

Newcastle United v Aston Villa (the season starts here, maybe)

Same. Mind with 4-4-2 and a decent lineup, I reckon we'll be a test for most teams at SJP this season. Morale is going to be a big thing this season. If we get a tonking this week we'll struggle but if we string a couple of decent results together at home (possible given our fixtures) it will stand us in good stead. Aye, Wolves after this and Blackpool at home. I would like to think we'd have 5 points at least from our next 3 fixtures. 4 for me. Let's not go too mental. -

If Alan Smith is on the pitch early on something has went very wrong. -

I agree, but then the actions of your fans was one of the most pathetic things I've seen at a football match from a club which we have little or no connection to. Don't be surprised if some of our lot are a bit pissed off. -

Amazing that they acted like that for a "small club that no one cares about" -

Still, give me a job. -
Ben Arfa still hasn't signed, Neesy is still suicidal and Oasis are still shit.

If this is wrong I'm telling you and your source to fuck off, regardless of whether I get banned or not.

You work at Thomson House? GISSA JOB!!! -
What the fuck is going on in that article? It literally tells us nothing. Okay, it kind of hints that we might not be very good this season but that's a given (and for the record I thought both Coloccini and Williamson had good games, so how Mr Ogden can say that Big Mike was held back by his partner I do not know).

I believe we should wait until the transfer window closes before whinging because the club has a track record of pulling deals out of their arse which no one, press nor fans, knew about. After that I plan to be indulging in some world class moaning though, believe you me. such as? Gutierrez, Xisco, Routledge, Best, Williamson etc. We manage to get a lot of things done on the hush nowadays. but why are we waiting until the end of the transfer window, after 3 games have been played, we all know it'll come down to 1 or 2 points, and you've wasted 3 games of the season to bed in your new signings! this club will never ever learn from it's previous mistakes under this regime It's not really a Newcastle thing, it's just the way the market works nowadays because of the transfer window. It's a sellers game. I maintain this transfer window idea is one of the worst things to have happened in football in recent years I agree. Silly rule, the reasoning for which seems to be filmsy at best. probably so Jim White and Sky Sports can hold their deadline day programme And it gives Two Phones Burton the chance to pipe up "big news coming out of League 1 this afternoon, Carl Regan looks to be one his way out of Bristol Rovers. That's a Sky Sports exlcusive for you there."

Bullard is a good player but his injury record is awful and for that reason I'd steer clear. 15 games in 18 months for Hull.
