Option 1) Spend a good percentage of our transfer budget on a defense and a good number of younger players with potential to compliment the rest of the squad we already have? Option 2) Ignore the defense on the strength of a few 'improved performances' and spend all the money on the midfield and a player to replace duke? Option 1 for me.

I agree its looking alot better (against the shit teams), I just dont think it is good enough to get us upto 5th if we repeat some of the heavy defeats we have this season. We will score one more than you in todays game does not work. I think we should bring in a couple of better defenders (CD) and keep what we have. Without Taylor or Faye playing we have been even worse this season, logic says we need two players as good if not better than them to ensure we have a consistent defense over a season.

I disagree Our defense DOES need looking at. To conceed an average of 1.71 goals a game in the league (total 65) is an absolute joke, settled or not. If we are trully aiming for top 5, we need two new centre backs, with Faye and Taylor as cover. Look at 5th to 7th below and the stats of the teams we are aiming for: Everton - .86 a game (total 33) Villa - 1.34 (51) Blackburn 1.26 (48) I agree the back for are settled but they are NOT doing the job. I appreciate this has alot to do with the whole team but none the less, changes are needed IMHO. The problem was how we defended as a team prior to the switch to 433. Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand and Brown would leak just as many goals if they had what our defenders had in front of them. The 433 is a problem as well I think against the better teams, we need a squad that can change between the two because over a season, we are still going to get fucked over by the better teams if we do not change the defense with the current setup (which seem favoured by Keegan and the players).

WTF has Bent done this season to warrent putting in a bid for? If we were happy to offer c£15m for Modric, then I think we should go to 25m for Berbatov. He would be class with Owen and Martins at his side.

Gutted for the lad. Hopefully he is settled in enough now and will be well looked after by the club. Hopefully he comes back to make it into the first team one day.

Its light years away to the Roeder methods of recruitment thats for sure. Not blaming him for that but it really does represent a huge step forward. Under transfer rules, is there anything to stop two clubs agreeing a fee and contract details with the player and for the player to sign a pre transfer agreement? This is the kind of signing we should be going for all day long - one for now and one that should only get better. Sooner have a player like this for 12-15M than a 30 something soon to be has been. Very good work if this is true. Even if not, our intentions seem alot better than they have in the past.

No one seems to have mentioned the fact half our old team is down there. Not sure who is fit out of them, but can see them raising the game a bit for this one. Still think we will have too much for them however. The performance (i.e. not very pretty) was to be expected, better football at the weekend me thinks - and a win. Win all our last games and that should see us finish above them and spurs.

From what we have seen, extend his contract. If his pace starts to go I think he could easily move to central defence. He clearly loves it.

I think we have to spend 50-70M, that covers youngsters, 2 strong players and 2 exceptional players. We can also claw some money in from sales. As others have said, this amount will not necessarily push us to where we need to be. I think Ashley will provide the funds. More than most Chairman he has been really involved with the fans and I think he knows we need to invest. That said, I also think he will not be held to ransom on signings unlike Fat Fred. Bring it on I say, I think it will be an exciting summer. Keegan will want the players in the bag as soon as possible so he can have them in for a solid pre-season. Lets hope Euro08 does not get in the way of players coming in.
