I completely agree, being a back up international player always looked like a shit deal to me. Flying all over the place checking out Georgia and Moldova's benches when you could be at home doing something you enjoy, and it will be much worse if you have a family. This is true, but then again you could apply that logic to any situation where a player doesn't get exactly what they want. You're still representing your county at the end of the day. Not in a mean way, but so what? He's made a personal decision not to pursue it further. Being a pro footballer doesn't bind you to being senselessly patriotic to the detriment of everything else you want from life. If he's not enjoying it, or doesn't want to do it - for whatever reason - that's his prerogative. It's not like permanently committing to be a parent then washing your hands of the child!

We've had about 7 or 8 in my lifetime I've hated Pardew and Souness more, for example, but annoyance is a different category. I'd say he was more annoying than McClaren for example.

In his shoes, I'd have done the same. Can't think of many managers more annoying than Chris Coleman. If you're not getting a game or enjoying it, and you'll get cut for tournaments at the drop of a hat, I'd rather have my free time back when off club duty too.
