But here's an equally simple question: Do you honestly think that Shepherd, had he remained king of the castle, would have had us back competing with Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool? I don't. I think he peaked five years ago and his business legs had gone. The question of what he achieved back in the day is, frankly, irrelevant.

Aye, Keegan not having a holiday is a great idea. It's obviously in our interests for him to be totally knackered next season, and just because the beginning of the close season is the best time to have a vacation, particularly when there's little transfer activity because much of the footballing world is preoccupied with an international tournament, that's no excuse for someone who loves the club. He should be ashamed of himself.

After the summer when we were so desperate for a striker that we signed the clapped-out Ian Rush, or the summer when the only player we brought in was Lee Bowyer on a free, I've given up hoping for anything in particular from transfer windows. I'm content to wait and see what we get. And silence is, of course, always preferable to regular spouts of Shepherd bullshit.
