Who did he turn down?
-
What are these 'tremendous' contacts in the game? There are also some important differances between those two sets of players.
-
That's not a problem for us, he can live in London and travel up on the day of the match. Or he could live in London and watch it on the telly like Dennis. thats the big plan, ashley in hollywood, managers in london, The Tea lady hands the team sheet out with the cuppas saturday lunchtime, But who's selling the timeshares in Spain?? I have had! in Gran Canaria...
-
Didn't your hero leave Newcastle the first time because we became a PLC? Read Indi's post again, a few times. It may help you understand the point he's trying to make. You and Indi have really mastered this talking down to people lark. Well we've learnt from the master, I see you've moved on to irony now. Watch it.

Why is that fella? Corporate finance, top level professional sport, marketing - professionals don't always get things right, but you'd back them to do so more often than inexperienced amateurs. Also, the way you approach decisions when you're on the inside and your job and livelihood depends on it is a bit different from how you see things from the luxury of an outside position. The club can't be run by a bunch of Monday morning quarterbacks. To turn it round, I'd be interested to know why people think we'd generate more income and produce better decisions with a fans' collective. The amaeturs own the club Bobby they don't run it. What's the point of them owning the club, if they're not going to influence the decisions that are made? They do things like vote for a president etc who then chooses a manager and delegates downward. It's insanity that fans who own shares in a club would actually be hands on. The beauty of course is that the president can be changed if they are doing a bad job, not so our current owner. Membership of course could be reigion wide and infact international as the club grows through its ethics, philosophy and playing style. Different to a PLC in what significant way? Majority shareholders get the biggest say and basically control the club ie FFS and the shareholders payouts. There would be no payouts to any of the fan owners ever. The role of chairman would come up for renewal every four years and the man in charge can continue to run for it or a new man could come in. Fans can get on the board and even if they are not voted in the board will meet with fans at regular terms to put there point across. So very different really. Yup.

The first comment under the article sums it up. Poyet would be a proxy manager for Wise.

Based on? Never managed in the PL for a start. This isn't the time for an exotic coach, the rest of this season will become backs to the wall stuff very quickly. He won;t know what to do. IMO the time to expriment with a coach like Zico is when everything else is in place and that certainly isn't the case with us. His assistant will be absolutely vital, and I believe the board will be looking to keep Houghton on board, who is very experienced in this league. We need to stop playing it safe, it's time to take a risk. I don't think our team is so poor as to be threatened with relegation, so lets go for it. There are no outstanding, prem experienced candidates out there. Accept your point about the assistant. In our situation I'd prefer Bilic. Fener are a wildly rich club quoted on the Turkish stock market with a value approaching 2 billion dollars or summink. And the have made the step up to solid CL performaces recently under Zico...Might just be the wrong time to hire him is all I'm saying.

It's quite late.

Would be an absolute disaster imo.

IMO as good a precis of events as any in this thread.

Tbh I thought I believed they had sunk to a low the way the KK issue was handled, but looking at some of the things they are coming out with now, I shudder to think how low these sad individuals will go.

"I cannot help but sneer at Ashley’s alleged modus operandi for Newcastle United as being inspired by Arsenal. Dear, dear me. What planet is this man from? On what day of the week would Arsene Wenger tolerate an upstart like Wise operating from the shadows to buy and sell his players? Arsenal? Don’t make me fucking laugh – the man has completely missed the point. The simple truth of the matter is that there is little investment going in on the playing side. We have heard that the budget for players was £12m this close season. Well, we haven’t even spent that pitiful amount have we?" TF

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/newcastle/article4678988.ece So, if this is true. What the hell should the owner and board have done then? Everyone has so far assumed that Keegan wasn't making unrealistic demands as far as targets go, well it turns out this might not have been the case, which is what I suspected to be honest. The owner clearly wanted a team of younger emerging players, and said this from the outset. What options did he have if Keegan then came in and started asking for these types? Discuss. This must have been going on for ages it look slike, as we all remember the Henry quotes! I am shocked they didn't part ways much earlier as they clearly should have. It's no wonder we had been linked with Marcelino so far back then, as the club was probably already making contingency plans. Absolute madness from both sides. "The nonsensical claims being made from “club insiders” or “sources close to directors” that Kevin Keegan wanted the club to buy Ronaldo, Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry etc are simply laughable but also offensive. Who will put their names to these accusations? Who will stand up and speak the words against Kevin Keegan rather than making sly calls to journalists and anoymously planting stories in a tawdry exercise of black propaganda from the Dr. Goebbels of Barrack Road. It was little surprise that it was Rob Beasley of the News of the World who was leading with this story in the Sunday newspapers. You will remember Beasley was the journalist who sat in the director’s box at SJP last season next to Ashley. You can fill in your own gaps." TF

There was no transfer windows back then and all those players were bought just after the season so that's why the list i saw had them as 96/97. Spending 12 and 10m a season in 97 and 98 is a shitload of money considering they were at Highbury and didnt have the new TV money. That's the equivalent of 40-50m today. They were also already a title challenging team when spending this money and had players like Henry, Viera and Campbell on around 100k a week. So what happened to this years TV money? iirc it was in the region of £40m. Even if Ashley didn't put his own hand into his pocket we should have had more than £12m to spend. Or is the money Ashley paid for the club actually a loan which he expects the club to pay back? Simply put if KK had even 25m at his disposal and been allowed some say or infact even been allowed to choose one or two he'd still be here.
-
Was just thinking that...He'd tear Wise's head off!!
-
that's actually wrong. he only bought 2 players in 96/97 so how could he spend 20m on vieira and anelka. http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=piruthZqw9z7KPOQuZ0P6Gg so .... 96/97 a profit of £995,000 97/98 net spending of £12,525,000 98/99 net spending of 10,630,000 99/00 a profit of £13,580,000 00/01 net spending of £900,000 01/02 net spending of £18,976,000 so for those first 6 seasons an average of £5,726,000 net spending a season. You need to factor in player valuations in the current market and player value inflation due to vast tranches of incoming capital. For instance a £12m spend in 97-98 (10 years ago) would be something like spending 40-50m now on similar players. The Arsenal analogy is either a delusion or badly thought through, as others have said earlier (Wullie etc) they already had the core of a good side and a business used to success, infact Wenger still added 5 players some of high value Overmars? to that set up. What strikes a cord with me is the Spurs analogy, a club who continue to sell their best (developing) assest every 2/3 seasons for a profit...IMO this is much closer to what Ashley is upto.
