I thought so to. You've heard a few rumours about Newell, have a banana.
-
Can I ask you why? The man took over a team 16 points clear in League 2 and they just scraped promotion. He's also an absolute wanker, a big pisshead, not exactly good for setting examples to his players is he? ''After winning a Premiership medal with Blackburn in 1995 - 10 of his 12 appearances were as a substitute, mainly for Shearer or Chris Sutton - Newell obtained his first managerial experience, as did Brian Clough, at Hartlepool. Shortly after he had gone to Luton in the summer of 2003, the club went into administration, but despite the loss of several players Newell took only two years to have them promoted from the equivalent of League One as runaway champions. Not only that; he promptly established them in the top half of the Championship. And he did it all while selling £7.5 million worth more players than he bought. At nearly 43, he has seriously damaged the assumption that England has stopped producing bright young managers. It was all too predictable that Newell should suffer for his candour about bungs. But he has proved himself the sort of character Newcastle and their new manager, should they take the plunge with Shearer, will need. While Shearer took the bows, Newell could do the job.'' I don't really want Shearer or Newell hence the thread. But Newell strikes me as a good counterpoint to Shearer. No biggie.

Mike Newell? Watford.

I rate Newell. And yes if we lack imagination to catastrophic levels and appoint Shearer then Newell would be ideal help for him.

''Face of a choir boy but a machette tucked into his sock''... Comentator on Iniesta.

Capello looks bemused by all hustle and bustle and missed passes.

You can say you're not interested inthe job without it being an absolute. Take Roeder for example. Shearer probably knows his own mind a bit better than Roeder, and sticks to his word. Traits that would make him a better manager than Roeder was. In fairness I have to agree with you on that - I'm convinced Roeder's attainment of 7th place was in no small part due to Shearer's influence on the team as co-pilot. I think results attest to that much, so maybe, just maybe, Shearer has what it takes to motivate and maintain discipline in a squad of players in a way Roeder clearly didn't at this level. That said, I would still prefer he went and managed Southampton or somesuch other club first.

Defoe is better than Martins in many key components.

this is precisely the vibe that is being given off, but people are in denial of it. Aye, there's two ways of looking at it: it's because we aren't spending anything or because we don't want to alert clubs to our spending power and / or raise expectations in fans before player(s) are through the door. Time will tell. I'd be surprised if we bought a significant player this window without selling one first. And I don't mean some £2-3m jobbie. I don't mind us doing tidy bits of business though, especially in January. Accepted.

Because he'd be interested but doesn't want to put any pressure on Allardyce. Seems to have the best interests of the club at heart by saying nowt. Don't really understand the logic behind that. You think his silence means he might be interested? But everytime he has commented on it in the recent past he has said he's sick of being mentioned in this context. If he had our real interests at heart he'd go an manage somewhere else first.
-
There's no point second guessing Mort really. I don't think we'll spend much in this window and he's already started lowering expectations reg this window. Unless we sell that is. I hope we get rid of Martins and get someone else in.

...basically comparing Gullit to Klinsmann shows a dangerously low level of mental competance.

I personally would want Klinsmann over Shearer. Like Parky says, he would have far more contacts which are vital in finding plyers. He's got a bit of experinece on a massive stage and been successsfull and has implemented a good style of football as well. Shearer is such an unknown quantity and i's rather not risk thenew found stability we have at the club on a complete unknown. Its begging for failure in my eyes. The thing that irratates me with Shearer is that he seems to be waiting for the job, fully aware that his hero status will always propels him to the top of every new managers list there is at the club. If he has a style of management, i want to see it implemented at a different club before he takes ours. Sorry to be flogging this horse to death but what's to stop Klinsmann turning into another Gullit? I can well remember people being temporarily enthused about his promises of "shexy football, yah?", only to become equally disenchanted as they are now with Allardyce not too many months afterwards when he fell out with Lee and Shearer. Ain't no such thing as a guaranteed recipe for managerial success. The main reason is that Gullit has always been a bit mad. Also their respective approaches to challenges are worlds apart. Klinsmann is as methodical and a good communicator as he is tactically sly and inspired. For the record I was never that keen on him in the past but during the world cup he won me over with the way he communicated and put into practice how he wanted the German side to play, also the way he took the whole country with him. Bear in mind he had also to deal with the shadow of Beckenbauer who he later won over.

So why is he failing in the league in England? Maybe it's actually harder to win games in the Premiership than in La Liga.

The German thing is a bit narrow minded, why would nationality come into it? It would. You and I both know it would. But is shouldn't. Modern PL footie is a very competitive business and basically it would be silly to handicap ourselves in ways such as this.

Codswallop. He is moving back to Europe. I have it on good authority was sounded out for the Spurs job before Ramos and the Chelsea job when Mourinho left. He's played with and under some great managers and players and he's also reagarded as the man who turned around the German public who were fast losing interst in a boring national side. He loves attacking footie. "Besides playing for German clubs VfB Stuttgart and Bayern Munich, Klinsmann played abroad for Internazionale, AS Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur and Sampdoria. During this time he was under the tutelage of such coaches as Arsène Wenger and Giovanni Trapattoni, among others." Shearer might be able to do the job who can tell. But imo a silly and unnecessary risk to take given our new found financial stability and club management and behind the scenes ongoing improvements. I'd accept the French grandad (Houllier) rather than Shearer. Now he's moving back? So i was right! I'd have Houllier, but i'd prefer the board go for someone we've never heard of, take a massive chance on the worlds most up and coming whoever that is. Ideally they should take strong advice and 'look outside the box' before the next appointment I agree. I'd like someone from South America, bring a bit of samba style or Argie technique to our club, maybe even a Mexcian magician. Sao Paulo have won the league in the last two seasons, no idea who their manager is though, how old, previous record etc...But it would be nice to bring a totally fresh approach, not just to our club, but possibly the league. I'm sold. blueyes.gif

I guess Klinsmann is a long shot, but no harm in putting it into the ether.
