They're basically looking for someone daft enough to operate within the narrow constraints they'll give them. Style of play, etc is a distant secondary consideration. What constraints? If you mean little control over transfers and your best players being sold to bigger clubs, this is ~99% of manager positions, especially if they are looking to France as rumoured (though rumours are often incorrect). Nah, like ALL HIS BEST PLAYERS GETTING SOLD ALL THE TIME marra Not sure if you are serious here MrM but I'm not entirely convinced about this statement tbh. So who have we sold, the list really isn't that long and it's not ALL our best players: (not going to take every example here like for example Best, Duff, Nolan, Barton, Routledge, Forster, Simpson etc. because these deals made sense) Bassong - Had a great one season we got 8m for him, we had just been relegated, in the end proved great business because he was s**** after he left us. Carroll - We got 35 million for the player, still to this day think that was a great deal for a oft injured player who had proved himself for half a season in the PL. Cabaye - 20 million for our best player, who clearly wanted to leave after going in the huff in the summer because we knocked back Arsenal. The only thing wrong with this deal was we never replaced him. Debuchy - 10 million for a player that been out most of the season and getting close to 30 looks pretty darn good now especially when we replaced him with a quality player who is much younger and for half the price, great business. That's all I can think of, 4 players, in all the time he's been here. I'm not trying to stick up for Ashley here but this line that gets thrown around isn't really backed up, and all really goes back to Carroll because he was a young Geordie lad and Cabaye because we never replaced our best player. I agree with Baba, there's no constraints really here that other managers in other parts of the world don't live with on a daily basis.

What a pile of nothing Talk for the sake of talking I don't have a problem with this piece actually.

All we have learned is that those who fear the worst are probably right, we don't have any ambition in the slightest to be a proper football club and our only outlook is to survive. We're not a football club who strives to improve on and off the field, we're a business whose only targets are financial. I don't disagree with you that that is the impression that must be drawn. But I would really like to see their mission statement to see if they are just bad at planning for the goals or they are actually reaching them as you say.

I just finished reading this. I got to say good job to both the Chronicle asking some pertinent questions and Charnley for being pretty open with his answers. It's only a shame it took so long. In terms of the content, I kind of agree with the general sentiments of building towards the long term and not sacrificing principles for short term popularity. I agree also with the management structure he talked about of the triangle between the MD, chief scout and head coach. The need to find a head coach that fits within their structure is also made clear and again something I would agree very much with. What I would like to know though are what are the corporate goals or mission statement ? Is it (as I believe it should for any football team) to be the best team in the land and compete for the highest honours ? Or is it to be a financially sound business. Because if it's the former then after 7 years there is little sign of this long term strategy working, 7 years is enough time to have expected to see some progress but we are in exactly the same place as where we were when ashley took over, a nothing club competing for nothing. If it's the latter, then job done in the short term but good luck retaining that profitability when the supporters begin to slowly drift away as they are right now. While I applaud them for keeping to their principles of long term planning and fire prevention rather than fighting, all good businesses know when they need to compromise those principles by implementing short term solutions, such as right now we need a quality CB in the Jan window, by hook or crook they have to get one in. We also need a head coach in place for the remainder of the season that is capable of getting the points to ensure we stay in the PL, because the guy you have in place right now is not. You might need to accelerate the process by paying compensation for the head coach you want or find a better temporary solution. I hope they continue to communicate with the fans in this manner, sometimes we don't like what they have to say but the important thing is they are talking again. It would be nice to recognise that and not instantly jump down their throats because we don't like the content of the message. Having said that I don't blame any supporters for having a go at them because that kind of respect needs to be earned and they've done nothing over the last few years to earn any respect from the fans.

It'll be something shit like "Mick Quinn believe's John Carver is the right man to lead United through the rest of the season" or "Pavel Srnicek throws his hat into the ring, would be dream come true to manage United" or Freddy Shephard "I want to buy Newcastle United off Mike Ashley (but I don't have the money) and the reason why I had to sack Bobby" In other words more of their usual guff from their usual contacts.

That's a very good point, and there are a few teams like that nowadays in the PL. We were under Pardew, only sometimes not that good at soaking up pressure, but explains beating teams like Chelsea and such. Stoke are built in that manner too, look at their results and they do better against the better teams than expected and are often disappointing against the weaker teams. I think Southampton may be the best example of doing this right, even against us we had 16 shots and 56% possession to their 5 shots, yet still go the result. Too many teams now adopt this negative mindset and when required to change can't do it. Sunderland struggle more than others because of the quality of their forward players, who bar the t*** that keeps scoring against us are pretty dire. They've attempted to remedy that by adding Defoe, which will probably be enough this year to keep them up considering the likes of Hull, Leicester, Burnley, Aston Villa and QPR are their competition.

So his Kid goes to school in Benton, great what a wanker !!
-
Doesn't say when, could be taking a trip to benton in the middle of summer for all that infers

People in this frame of mind have all too quickly forgotten just how wretched Pardew's tenure was. I don't care if we know nothing until next season as long as they get the right man in. This is a piece of p*ss compared to only watching NUFC because I wanted us to get hammered. I would be quite happy to wait until the summer as long as they name who is coming in now so that we have something to look forward to. It's no good waiting only to find out we can't get who we're after then and be in the same situation as we are now only months later when we've written another season off. Yep, this pretty much sums where I'm at also. I would even be prepared to put up with Carver (though something obviously needs to be done to ensure we stay in the PL) until the end of the season if a genuine quality replacement was already signed up to start at the end of this season. I can just see a situation develop that they wait and wait for a guy only for another club to offer him a better deal in the summer, and as per with our club we have no contingency plan in place.

hope that your friend is right we need this resolved preferably in the right manner

Mate of mine teaches Beardsley's daughter how to drive. Says the hold up is due to television commitments by Garde. He is free to sign after next weekend's games. Wow great news thanks.
-
He's still our best CB which is a sad reflection on our recruitment process at that position. Don't worry though we've got a new CB coming back from loan in the summer, at the moment he's sat on the bench for a mid table championship team all season !!

Can somebody just make some ITK bollocks up, this is getting boring now. Can something fucking happen, ffs.

No chance Howe will come here sadly, I'd love him as well. If ever a statement summed up how far we have fallen under Ashley then that's surely it. Ridiculous knowing we have no chance of getting a manager from Bournemouth. It's also completely inaccurate. http://talksport.com/football/eddie-howe-rules-himself-out-running-newcastle-job-150107131363 Was he offered it ? Did we make a move to get him ?

The longer Carver remains in charge the higher the number gets. Obvious but so true now. The one thing in our favour is that there is a lot of crap down there, and if Southampton are the 3rd best team in the country then we surely will be able to pick up enough points from the remaining fixtures to stay up even with Carver in charge.
-
Having time to think about this, I believe this couldn't have gone better for us. A listless performance, that surely shows the ownership that they simply can't trust Carver with the job. The central defence was expose on the few occassions that Southampton actually created something. Clearly that area needs addressing right now. A lack of creativity also show we need to find something there too. Dummett had a bit of a mare while Haidara shone. Not really impressed with Southampton at all, with a half decent manager we would have won that game at a canter IMO. They created 4 chances all game, scored with two from terrible deending and goalkeeping (for the first), hit the bar with another and put in a good set piece. Outside of that really I struggle to see how they are 3rd in the league right now.

The two idiots on canadian TV, were insistent that it was the correct call no pen. I have no clue how they came to that conclusion.
-
This makes no sense. Makes sense to me but really can't be bothered to get into a tedious argument with you.
-
He always starts out well at clubs, but yeah it's just food and drink to those media, pundits and other fans who know our club better than us of course.
-
I don't think Southampton are all that great, they are certainly in a false position in the league, they are a tidy team, top half for sure but not a 4th placed team. We should be a couple up really. FFS Carver is gonna get a win here and land the job, that's the way things go for this club. Commentator keeps going on about their injuries, but really they have a couple of players out, we've got no Dejong, Aarons, Taylor or Tiote, all of whom would likely be pushing for a starting role. Anyway guess it's best to buy into the Southampton were decimated by injuries line, just in case Carver gets his win. A draw will probably be good enough for him to get it till the end of the season though. It's awful watching these games, hoping we lose.

The Ronny Gill aren't even hiding it anymore, it's shocking really.
-
the first quote doesn't even make sense as they are one in the same, surely they wouldn't bring someone else it to get us to the end of the season. The second point is just stupid, he's basically saying because we were so bad at the end of last season, we can't be bad at the end of this season, when surely the opposite is more likely. We've proven how bad we can be and it's possible to be that bad again. Ryder is a first rate fool, who seems to be blaming fans posting any concern that nothing is happening, painting them as knee jerkers (despite it being around 3 weeks since we knew he was going) and lauding those that don't voice their concerns as the intelligent ones. Fucking idiot.

Are The Chronicle not banned any more? Seems to me they're more likely to just be writing whatever guff comes to mind on a daily basis. I seriously doubt they have much (if any) actual knowledge about what's going on. The ban was lifted in December (http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/newcastle-united-lifts-ban-local-press-telegraph-journalists-remain-barred). It's not far fetched at all to believe that they have been given a heads up that an announcement is imminent and to start spreading pro-Carver stuff imho. The Bishop knows exactly what he is doing. I wasn't aware of this. This is even more worrying then. They are clearly avoiding the controversial issues, gone back into the support the regime mode. The lack of a article about their own poll showing 84% don't want him as manager is another sign, they've always been quick to back these types of polls up with an artice, not this time. The one glimmer of hope is that the club could have told them to promote Carver as much as they can, to manage expectations, therefore anyone, literally anyone they bring in instead will be greeted with huge relief and excitement. I may be crediting the club with too much intelligence here.
