  1. No, the Barry deal depended on Alonso going which looks now to not be happening.

Keane and Barry were both Rafas top targets.

So I take it Gerrard will play out wide this season (on the left) then, as appears to be the case with England under Capello also.

I don't think would be looking to move out left as he has made the England Squad as a very effective defensive midfielder int he centre of the park.

  2. 12.01 It's all go on the transfer front as Andy Johnson is also understood to be undergoing a medical at Fulham. The player's agent has claimed a deal is very much in the pipeline.

12.00 Liverpool should complete the £18million signing of Robbie Keane within the next 24 hours, according to reports. It is understood the Republic of Ireland international has undergone a medical at Anfield.

Hopefully everything finally kicks into gear this week.

So Liverpool have signed Keane for £18 million. Hmmmm ...

Gareth Barry might have to start backtracking pronto.

Anyone else think it came down to either Barry or Keane for Liverpool. Not sure they would go after both.

I think if they had got Barry they would have gone with Barry and Mascherano in midfield and gerrard continuing behind Torres. However, now they will likely opt to return Gerrard to midfield beside Mascherano and have Keane play upfront with Torres.

  3. Looks very raw to be fair to the lad, similar to Distin is stature and pace etc and with a bit of coaching could probably be a decent player.

Well keegan did manage Distin for a while so he might see that in the young lad.

Assuming we get Colccini and we have him in the first team with Faye, then Taylor as a third CB and this fella as a fourth wouldn't be a bad idea I don't think. also pretty handy that he can cover at LB if necessary.

David Edgar appears to be talented but I'm not sure if he is up to it physically. Maybe we are looking for another stronger more athletic youngster to bring through.

  4. My money is on him agreeing an improved contract where he is after all this unfortunately. I don't want to bring up old debates, but I would be a lot more optimistic about our chances in the transfer market if Keegan was involved. I'd love to be proven wrong here.

The thing is though, we have apparently already agreed terms on a 4 year deal with the player. Not sure if Depor are in a position financially to give him a new contract that would match our offer.

    "Apparently"

Yeah, I know ... the agent does seem to be making a real push to get the player to Newcastle though, so I'm hoping it's because we have already found agreement on a nice deal for him and his client.

    Guess we'll see soon enough.

  6. Getting nervous now...f*** off Spurs!!!

I'm as nervous about Spurs as the next man, and I can't stand them, but would they really pay £8 milion for a 26 year old Argentine international on sizeable wages who they couldn't promise a regular starting spot.

As of right now both Woodgate and King appear to be fit so I'm thinking they would bring in someone a bit younger and cheaper who wouldn't be as high profile to be their 3rd centre back.

  7. Jonas was eligible to buy out his contract and move to a foreign club. Coloccini is also eligible to do the same.

Also, it appears that Baptista is too, as he signed with Real on the 25th of July 2005, so as of the 25th of July 2008 he has been at Real for three years and is under 28 years old, and so is also eligible to buy out his contract and join a foreign club.

Intersting little strategy we have going here ... nice little prompt we can use when encouraging clubs to accept our offers.

Expecting Baptista to sign as soon as we can find a scrap heap for Alan Smith and Shola Ameobi.

    :celb:

But I thought the buy out thingy had to be done a few days after the season ended.

Not really sure if that is the case, but some of the Colccini articles claim that his agent threatened to invoke the rule, so it seems it can still be done.

  9. you would start to believe keegan's "i don't like argentinians" (well sort of) was a smokescreen...  :kasper:

Apparently we had a number of people watching the south america qualifiers for the world cup this summer, which were on at the same time as  the Euros.

So far we have signed Jonas and hopefully, Coloccini, both of whom were involved.

Did baptista feature in any of the games for Brazil? If so maybe that rumour has a bit more to it too.

Another interesting thing is this new rule of players being able to buy out there contracts and move for free after a certain number of years. Jonas qualified for this and Colccini also qualifies for this and it puts their clubs under considerable pressure to sell.

Has Baptista been at Real for up to three years yet? And does he fall under the same conditions?

  10. I don't get this £15m fees  :kasper: 11m should be a limit i think

So now we're spending too much?

    Couldn't make it up.

What's wrong with paying a reasonable price for a player? I don't think colocini is worth 15m. The less spend on one player, leaves more  money which we might need for other players... It's not that hard.

Well it appears they rejected our 12 million Euro bid, although they promised Colo's agent they would accept a bid of this size. There was also a bit in one of the articles about us wanting to pay in installments. I'm guessing the bid of 12 million Euros was probably rejected because we wanted to pay the fee in installments while Depor wanted it all upfront.

Perhaps we came to an agreement to pay in installments but then pay a higher fee overall i.e. 15 million euros rather than the initial 12 million.

In that case it's fair enough imo.

  11. Sunderland are being linked to Taye Taiwo in a couple of the papers today, I'd be gutted if they got him as I'd really like him here.

Obviously not as gutted as me because I was moved to create a new thread about it!

    I would be devastated!

  12. Is it just me who thinks Muntari isn't actually that good?

I can't see how he'd get into Inter's team at all. I expected him to be better for Portsmouth than he was, apart from scoring a few cracking long range goals he didn't really stand out.

Will be Mourinho's new Essien in a three man midfield.

Kind of agree with you 1878. He didn't really add too much other than his long range shooting.

  13. Cattermole started off looking quite bright but then degenerated into another overly agressive midfielder who thinks that clattering people unnecessarily means that he is a committed tough guy. Run of the mill.

  14. I think Keegan has looked and sounded really positive in the recent interviews he has done and I think it will all come together and he'll do well.

One big positive is the fact that he obviously rates Gutierrez very highly having worked with him in training this last week. I think this is of big significance because I imagine he was a player that was likely suggested by our new recruitment team, and Keegan liking him could go a long way towards making the partnership between Keegan, Wise, Jimenez and Vetere even more effective.

It should mean Keegan being more open to their suggestions of players for the first team, which would be great, as the three Wise men seem to have a lot of knowledge on good young players that would be invaluable.

I really think this is all going to work out really well. It probably wasn't clicking perfectly initially but I think it's all coming together.

    Crack pipe?

You just wait and see pal.

Now Keegan's recognised the Wise men's skills after they delivered Gutierrez, he's going to stop waiting around for experienced Brits to gather off of the big fours scrap heaps.

We will see some more quality young foreigners come in and all will be well in the world.

    Never doubt me.

  15. I assume his contract is pretty much tied up then.

Let's hope he can stay fit, as he's already started the season off with a strain.

Not really who else commands a starting place regularly?, Butt, Beye, Faye possibly

    What?

    I don't understand what you're on about.

My point was that it looks likely that his contract is likely to be sorted out soon enough otherwise they wouldn't have announced him as captain so early on.
