I can relate to this. I never knew this article existed until today but I have to admit I used the same basic method to choose Newcastle as the team I would support. Plus the fact that there is "stottie" bread (which is almost like my last name) clinched the deal. I've watched English football off and on since the 70s (WPIX in NYC used to have a prepackaged game of the week show) and quite a bit more since the advent of FSC. I couldn't watch these games any more without picking a team to root for and Newcastle was a natural fit. I actually feel bad because me rooting for a professional team is like the kiss of death. The New York Mets and New York Jets are heartbreaking teams to root for. Poor management, epic choke jobs and dreams of glory dashed upon the rocks have become routine. I mean, you guys can blame me for Allardyce and the ensuing mess simply because I started rooting at that time. And I know you guys will never look at me as a true fan. I'm not a fan like you when it comes to Newcastle but I am a fan like you when it comes to the American teams I grew up with. I've lived and died with the Mets and Jets for 40 years so I know how you feel about your team. Quite frankly, if Newcastle are relegated I would never be able to root for someone else. Even after just a couple of years i could never turn away because I've already invested too much emotionally to walk away. That's the kind of fan I am. All I have to say is thank God for the UConn Huskies because after 20 years of rooting for them, they ve given me two NCAA championships in the last decade. I guess I'm not a total loser It's only my second year of affiliation, but I must say I am quite happy with the level of success. Thirded. How glad am I that my father had left Central CT State for UConn by the time I was born.

OK, I'm willing to entertain the possibility that I've just spontaneously lost my mind. Is the idea that we've been underdogs against Tottenham for our last six wins THAT ridiculous? I've simply no idea how this has snowballed in such an ugly manner.

Now would be a good time to agree that we just want the other person to fuck off. I genuinely think we were underdogs for all six of the past wins against Spurs, but certainly I'd be willing to entertain anyone who'd like to offer an alternative opinion. But instead people would rather be dicks on an internet forum and just spout off what they think are witty one liners. And I'm fucking sick of it. This whole argument was probably somewhat unnecessary over what is a very minor point, and I take responsibility for being in a foul mood and contributing to the dross, but imo it encapsulates exactly what's wrong with how people speak to each other on here.

We were resurgent under Roeder and Shearer after Souness had been sacked and in the middle of a run which took us up to 7th place, it was towards the end of the season Spurs did have 5 away wins but failed to win at places like Bolton, Sunderland and West Brom, we were at home, no we were not underdogs. Our 3rd win in a row, we are at home against a Spurs side that had only won 2 away games so far that season so no we were not underdogs. We had made a decent start to the season under Fat Sam and were 10th, at home again and Spurs were sitting in 18th, yet to register an away win, so no we were not underdogs. We had made a terrible start to the season but not as bad as Spurs, since JFK had came in as manager we were unbeaten at home including victory against high flying Aston Villa, Spurs were well below us in 16th, we were at home and so no we were not underdogs. I'll give you that we were underdogs in the two away wins. Happy now? "here are some obscure statistics I spent the last half hour Googling that could conditionally support my argument, even then I couldn't find anything for two of the six though. But I have to protect my hard-ass image and I don't want to back down from my idiotically one-sided argument so I'll just pretend that I've actually proved something and keep being unnecessarily confrontational and condescending." We did however have some central midfielders that could at least pass the ball in Emre and Parker. I wasn't the biggest fan of Parker but he was and is a lot better than what we currently have in central midfield. They were both out for something like half the season though. The absolutely shit luck we've had this season just emphasizes how amazingly lucky we were to dodge the bullet that year.

I miss Onyewu. He was shit but he was at least big and intimidating and I liked that. I fondly remember him playing whack-a-mole with the awful Welsh dwarf when we beat Liverpool at SJP that year. Any Americans want to comment on how he's doing lately?

Yeah he was a shit manager, and he was never going to take us forward, but he certainly has contributed nowhere near as much to the destruction of the club (IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, I KNOW KEEGAN DID GREAT AMAZING -worthy THINGS IN THE 90s) as the other six. The fact that we didn't go down in 2006-2007 despite an epic injury crisis that makes our current one look like a joke is nothing short of a miracle.

I kind of know what you mean. Today was a great game, but I'm not entirely sure I enjoyed it as it was so f***ing tense. I meant the goal was scrappy from our point of view, with our slapstick defending making it easy. There's definitely a gap between us and the rest, though. An amalgamation of our squad and yours would have a good chance of cracking the top four. Unfortunately, neither team are good enough at the moment. With us the problem is that we've got the money, we're too hit and miss with our signings. With you, you don't have the money, but when you do spend it, you spend it well. Moyes is a quality manager, though, at least as good as, and arguably better than, O'Neill, overall because he makes some really great signings. No offense to either of you, but the sight of an Everton fan and a Villa fan patting each other on the back is just about enough to make me weep these days.

It appears you aren't a fan of Martins Dave. What if he was given a chance with Carroll who today showed he can actually flick the ball in the direction of his strike partner. Probably wouldn't help because running into channels is to Martins what hitting accurate long passes is to Nicky Butt. It's like he doesn't want to use his pace to get on the end of through balls.
