The imminent transfer of Luton Town defender Leon Barnett to West Bromwich Albion has been interpreted in some quarters as the first step to the departure of unsettled centre back Curtis Davies from the Hawthorns. Newcastle have been consistently linked with the 22 year-old, who has relinquished the captain's armband after seeing a transfer request rejected by the Baggies. Interest in the defender first came to light during Glenn Roeder's stint at the helm, but the toon connection with Nigel Pearson remains - the current Magpies coach having worked with Davies at Albion as both assistant to Bryan Robson and in his own right as caretaker boss. With Steven Taylor, Davies and Pearson also share an England U21 connection. No confirmation has yet emerged as to who the mystery defender was who turned down a move to Tyneside last week - but it's claimed that he was from a Premiership club, which would exclude Championship player Davies. Davies was red-carded for the first time last season after two foul challenges on a certain Mark Viduka, then with the smoggies. 2. He hasn't played a competitive game since breaking the fifth metatarsal in his foot last March - the same injury Joey Barton sustained last Saturday. PS: Another revived transfer link is that of FC Copenhagen stopper Brede Hangeland, with the Norwegian rag VG running a story on Tuesday apparently confirming our interest. Quotes then surfaced from his Mister 15% naming Newcastle as one of a number of clubs sniffing round the 26 year-old who is under contract to the Danes for another two years.

Well said. People are forgetting we finished 13th last season and that'll linger in some players' thoughts when deciding on whom to join. I'm actually looking forward to the remainder of this window, could be quite a few twists and turns just yet....

I agree that the Chron hinders the club, plus I think our players talk far too much to the local media. Sick and tired of all the 'We'll bounce back for the next game" Shola, Dyer, Taylor type stories I'd much rather have the odd one rather than everyday shite. Censor the Chron a little more I reckon, shut Alan up.

Always been one of my fave toon players when hes on form and unless we get a much better player in place of him, I think we still really need him. If he was to go then I wouldn't accept anything under £4m.

Well, at least fanni's not joining us from .com: As widely predicted, the fantastically-named Rod Fanni has left Nice for pastures new. However the defender who has recently been linked with a move to Newcastle has opted to stay in his native France and moved to Rennes. There'll have to be a hell of a lot of transfer phone calls done this week like, I hope to see some new faces sharpish...

I'd love to have Baptista here but if we did sign him, obviously we need to do it quickly. He said he wants to see what the new Real coach wants to do with him but I say definitely sign him up this window. 3 - 4 Defenders in 1st and then try to get Baptista in.

Pre-season friendlies are all about building up fitness levels, getting to know new team mates better and for the coaches to experiment with possible formations/tactics. Not much more, which is why I take little notice of the results whatsoever. There's been many teams over the years who had disastrous pre-season results and have ended up high in the league table. Sure, at the end of the friendlies you get to see a more coherent team performance but you'd be stupid to judge anyone after 2 pre-season friendlies but going by opinions on this board, its already happening I'm betting
