Indeed - and some seem to be blaming Redknapp for that sequence of events. I don't like him either but he did what was asked of him at Portsmouth. He won a trophy and put together a good squad.
-
Chelsea couldn't cover their running costs either but they have an owner who is prepared to fund any shortfalls. Portsmouth thought they had a similarly minded and well resourced owner and Redknapp was given the geeen light to do what he did. If Abramavitch went tits up you would have an even worse situation at Chelsea and it would not be Mourinho's fault imo.
-
Redknapp was given the go ahead by the owners to buy players - it wasn't his money. And if you buy something you can't afford and then sell it at £40 odd million profit was it a mistake to have bought it?
-
I just wonder if Louise would have spotted Beckford's "significant flaws" if Steve Bruce/Sunderland were trying to sign him.
-
To be fair to Redknapp (not something I want to make a habit of) - if you were him and had just managed Portsmouth to an FA Cup win, then the owners start looking shaky and then a high profile club like Spurs taps you up. What would you do? He wasn't going to take Pompey any further. And he did use the money he was given there pretty effectively. In the end the club made very good profits when they sold the likes of Johnson, Defoe and Diarra.
-
If he had longer to run on his contract at Leeds it would be a lot more than £2 million.
-
Hughton walks and launches constructive dismissal case. F*ck - and everything was all going so well.
-
Is this for real? The photo in the opening thread looks a bit odd - someone tell me it's just that I can't take in the fact that someone has punted money on former club captain Gezza when he's out of contract this summer......
-
Bet whoever gets the Boton job will suddenly find a bit of money made available for tarting up the squad.
-
I bet Real Madrid are well pissed off that Collocini got cup tied today........
-
How do Johnny Evans and Wes Brown ever get a game at ManU when they have Vidic and Ferdinand? It's a long season with a lot of games and you need strength in depth to cover injuries, suspensions and loss of form. Right now we have virtually zero cover at the back and have probably been lucky not to have been more exposed. Even with the depth that ManU have, they got caught short recently and Carrick had to play in the middle of the back four. Sh1t happens - whatever level you're at....
-
If nothing else it would surely break some sort of record for business done in a January transfer window
-
I honestly can't remember the last time I saw or heard anything from him. It's true - he's been spotted at a few matches but his profile (with us) is low right now. You can only hope and pray that some sort of lesson has been learned.....
-
As much as I'd like to blame the saggy faced c***, someone else sanctioned the transfers and wrote the cheques. Or not as the case may be. And with that money he bought a number of players who the club sold on at a huge profit. The club has had a disastrous series of ownership changes (arguably worse than us) but fundamentally it is not equipped to be in the Premiership, the ground only holds about 20,000 people is the first of many problems they have.
-
Saw that, f***ing unbelievable. Stinks of Allardyce & games against Derby. Hughton will be as pissed off as anyone that we didn't win a match that we could and should have won - he's just playing the spin game played by every manager in the world.
-
Caulkin's view of the match - about right as usual imo. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/football_league/article6969950.ece

West Ham let him go as much for his wage as anything else. Who do you want to be replaced to make place for him anyway? In an ideal world you would want Nobby rather than Geremi holding down the the geriatric "right side" third choice in the squad spot. Probably cost about £40k a week less and, if needed, would probably do a better job. Don't think it's a runner for a number of reasons - here's two: as far as I can see we aren't signing 35 year old players and second clubs aren't queuing up to buy Geremi at £50k a week or whatever he's on.

Why are rugby people so sanctimonious/superior ?

Is Gareth the only gay in the village? -
Remember it well - SBR responded by publicly reminding Bellamy that he had a contract with Newcastle. Dirty linen being shown for all the world to see sadly. So take your point. I don't think Bellamy has ever stepped out of line whist Hughes was managing him?
-
I thought the problem was more that when Shearer was injured Souness played Kluivert and Bellamy up top and they were very effective. Shearer came back from his injury and Souness tried to fit the three of them into a starting line up somehow. Bellamy was (typically) fairly vocal about the fact that he thought he and Kluivert were the best option the club had as strikers, so it was only a matter of time before he was shown the door. He always leads with his gob but he's played out wide for Citeh a few times without complaint so, as Tron said, he can be managed.
-
Class act at this level - but he's not big enough and would still get well turned over by any number of strikers in the the Premiership.
-
Piece of piss saving that free kick like
-
Anyone else spotted the WBA player Gonzalo Jara - can play in a number of positions and keeps the game ticking, looks a good young player imo.
-
It clearly wouldn't have worked and the attempt to recruit Arry as manager to fit into our "structure" was the first example we had that demonstrated without doubt that Ashley was clueless.
-
I hate to say it but the Spuds are pretty well run by a board of people who seem to know what they are doing (the Jol episode apart).
