  1. The situations are pretty similar, but I don't think I'd want to trade financial places with you. We don't have all the details yet, but.... 2022/23 accounts have Villa with both higher wages and amortisation costs on £33m less in revenue. NUFC's wages for this time period will also include CL bonus money (though I assume Villa's have a European bonus). For 2023/24 NUFC adds the Sela shirt sponsor plus CL revenue, as well as the sale of Maxi. NUFC revenue will exceed £300m for the first time ever. Villa also has a new record shirt sponsor deal, player sales, plus ECL money and higher PL merit. I'd expect Villa's wages to rise in this season's accounts more than Newcastle's, while revenue continues to lag behind. 2024/25 we both add Adidas. For NUFC this should largely offset the loss of CL revenue. Remains to be seen if we'll have European money; Villa will most likely have CL money. Maybe revenue roughly equals out by this point (not counting player sales, which is hard to predict), though I expect both sides to have made progress on the commercial front by then. We'll see who does it better. But, importantly, Newcastle is currently in the midst of the season that needs to produce a profit to keep the three period within the rules. This means in each of the next two seasons there will be large deficits rolling off. Villa, on the other hand, now have to keep things balanced with a loss of over £100m remaining in play until the end of 2024/25. For UEFA's cost control ratio (wages + amortisation / revenue) and whatever version comes to the PL, both clubs have work to do but NUFC is in a better starting position on all inputs. I'm not really looking at player sales because neither team is in a position to sell their best players without adding tremendous risk. Watkins, Luiz, Bruno could all bring in big money, but replacing them could be difficult. Both have fringe players that may or may not be able to be moved on if every club is worried about spending. Ramsey is a nice wild card for you, though the constant injuries aren't helping. It wouldn't be for as much, but Newcastle could sell Longstaff or Anderson if necessary.
  2. We're pretty fortunate to have gotten where we are with a single investment at CB.
  3. The 23-year-old has used the time to learn the English language, which Dan Burn recently described as "unbelievable" Asked about Tonali last week, Howe said: "We have spent time with him identifying areas of his game that we want to improve. He's got a lot of time to do that so we have spent a lot of time with him doing that. That naturally engages your brain into what you're doing. If we had not done that and it was just random training for him that was not specialised, that's when he could potentially drift mentally. "I have to say he has been very good in supporting his teammates and very good in making the training sessions better for everybody. I've definitely seen an improvement in his game despite the fact he is not playing. That can sometimes be very difficult to improve your game without getting the match stimulus you need, but he has played in training games and bigger pitch stuff. It's important that we do that for him so athletically he does not suffer."
  4. They did do a great job of resetting, but should see a pretty significant increase again in the 23/24 books with Rice, Havertz and Timber, plus a huge new contract for Saka and also new deals for Odegaard, Saliba and Martinelli. Despite their relatively reasonable wages, they've lost money five years in a row and Kroenke has been adding debt. Their revenue has fallen to the bottom of the 'big 6,' but consecutive CL qualifications will help significantly. They've fallen way behind the others on commercial income, which I found surprising.
  5. Doesn’t the listed facade go all the way around? Or does that imply only the part furthest away from the stadium?
  6. This was my main takeaway. Assuming the club hasn’t been totally reckless I’m guessing the ‘’must tear down” type headlines are overblown. CL revenue plus Adidas will obviously help. But it seems there will be little room for major additions without some sales.
  7. Do you have a link to the actual accounts? I haven't seen them and don't see them on their site.
  8. Sounds like the £56m in Covid losses is helping them bring that number down and then I guess infrastructure, women's football, etc.? Going to be interesting to see how they balance the the three year period ending in June without those Covid losses included anymore.
  9. That's an eye popping increase to their wage bill. Seems likely to cross £200m in the 2023/24 accounts. Higher wages and amortisation costs than NUFC on £33m less revenue.
  10. More Mintehs will be a big part of the plan to beat financial restrictions; more young players to come in this summer More detailed focus on making loans successful (we helped Minteh find an apartment, Shola visits often) Club will evaluate in preseason, but another loan most likely. Feyenoord interested, Championship possible. Hall is getting closer to "triggering" his deal, but there are no details. He may be loaned out next season.
  11. I'm struggling to get excited about CM links without knowing if these are Bruno replacements.
  12. It's not just more complicated than that. It's not remotely true that a £20m sale affords two £50m players.
  13. Yes, would be revenue for us and costs for them. Though they can probably offset it by making his title Director of Football presented by Burger King.
  14. You could also easily argue that a Man United collapse would just be regression to the mean.
  15. They really could have no complaints if they had 10-12 less points. It’s infuriating.
  16. RW and LB are the two positions where the right signing could completely transform the team. My preference between the two is the best RW option money can buy, ideally someone who can be a backup striker also. Striker and CB need succession planning / young depth. CM is interesting because with no outgoings we have enough bodies, but the mix feels a little off to me. It will be interesting to see what we do. And we really need a backup GK that plays similarly to Pope.

    England

Seems like Southgate’s sole job at this point should be figuring out how to construct the best XI and system around Bellingham, Saka, and Foden.
  18. I haven’t seen confirmation anywhere, but this is my best guess.
  19. Here’s a complaint from a pro-Eddie / pro-patience perspective… I will caveat this by saying we obviously have way less information than the coaching staff and we also have an extended break before the next game plus only two in the next four weeks, so it may have played a factor. But I think the most fair criticism of him has to do with player rotation and rest. Isak starting three games and playing 200 minutes in a week and Willock playing in all three on their immediate return from injury seems an unnecessary risk given the seasons they’ve had. And if Isak is going to start today then it would have been the perfect time to give Gordon a rest. Instead he played 300 minutes this week. Gordon is going to hit 4000 minutes this season; maybe 4,500 including the U21 Euros. Eddie also doesn’t consider any game won or lost until there’s more than a two goal deficit. See: Gordon coming off immediately following Tino’s goal today. It probably won’t matter much for the rest of this season, but it’s going to be critical that he accepts rotation as a necessity even if it may reduce the likelihood of winning a given game and that he trusts squad players to see out games earlier than he usually does.
  20. I definitely had a Shearer / NUFC shirt in that style that I got in Norway in like 1998.
  21. The only good news is he could be out for almost a month and only miss two games. Probably also our best backup behind him.
  22. Good win, but you never know what PIF might do.
  23. You only think that because we’re happy to cede possession and then counter. They haven’t threatened at all.
  24. If we’re worrying about Fulham we’re not qualifying for Europe.
