Portsmouth's run was great in the sense of it being someone different winning it. But if you look a bit more closely, the stars damn sure aligned for them. They had one obvious stand out result - beating Man Utd so fair play there (well, after Man Utd's goalie had got sent off). But otherwise, they didn't play a single Premier League team. Their wins were 1-0, 2-1, 1-0 (a 90th minute own goal), 1-0, 1-0, 1-0. Still a great achievement but it was hardly like they were battling through hard tie after hard tie. Just a solid, well-drilled team with a couple of stand-out attacking players, a very kind draw, and bingo.

You'd think they would improve by now but nope, ITV are still absolutely awful with football coverage. Still.

I can't say I know that much about them but I was under the impression they're one of those very decent sides (quarter finals last year?) who, while you hardly think "shit they're unbeatable", you'll have to play very well against to beat. I agree with you Billy that something doesn't sit right with the deal, because it does stink a bit. But I agree with Stu here: I think he'd do anything to get ahead, he's as ruthless as they come. I'm quite sure he's done a number of things in his managerial career which weren't entirely ethical or "right" by general standards but if this is how Spurs get Fryers, then so be it. They've taken advantage of poor rules, can't really blame them for that.
