I think its obvious Pardew wants to buy him. Any games this season will help him bed into the squad and get settled. Judging by comments in the press we aren't paying his wages until he plays as well. I would have liked to have spent £35m in January but I don't see that much of a problem with the Ireland deal.

Is he underrated? Definitely. Don't really think he's underrated. I think pretty much everyone appreciates he's class. Love the impact he, as a 'right back' (I know, but still) has on a team going forward. Yes, he has brilliant players around him but his level of contribution is such an asset for Barca. The sheer thought of knowing that at any time he's running past you but being blind to it is a ballache for the defending team in itself. I'm talking top 5 in the world though. I don't think many rate him that highly but they should. Sid Lowe does. Wise man.

Looking back through this thread at the 'Messi couldn't play in the Premier League' comments is mental. The lad is probably one the strongest players pound for pound in the world. Search on youtube for 'Messi never dive' if you want to see him ride some rough challenges. If players like Nasri and Nani can be successful in the Premier League why wouldn't Messi? Sorry to drag this argument up again but I'll never understand this argument against him.
