Barton barely featured in the time period you's are on about btw. Midfield in the Championship was mainly Guthrie-Smith-Nolan-Jonas, until January when it was mainly Routledge-Guthrie-Nolan-Jonas. Smith started the first few games of the following season including the 6-0 win against Villa but was soon out of the team by the time Tiote signed, Barton generally starting on the right by that stage.

I know what you're getting at and there are loads of ways we could line up in attacking positions now. However I think Perez starting needs to be a given, he's our best player. If we'd bought him for more money he'd be in the team.

I've only seen him "live" a couple of times but was astounded with him at West Ham last year. Just seems seconds behind in every situation, chasing the ball but not getting anywhere near it. When he gets the ball he's tidy enough with it, but he's thoroughly pointless unless he scores or assists. He's simply not a very good player at all.

They're actually keeping him out of the side though, Perez could easily slot in anywhere across the front 4 and we'd not jeopardise our balance too much by taking out one of Colback or Anita. People can say what they like about needing 2 conservative midfielders in the team (I disagree anyway) but it's not even making us look much more solid and it's most certainly contributing to us having fuck-all going forward. Just slot Perez in anywhere - left, right, central - doesn't matter. Kid needs to be on the pitch, no excuses. If McClaren doesn't appear to understand that over the next few games I'll actually start getting a bit concerned.

I'm just saying it's not must-win, if we draw it or whatever then we'll most likely be fine. I've said since the fixtures came out that we'll be near the bottom come October but if confidence isn't shattered by then we could plough on and have an alright season.

It's not must-win because there are 32 games after that and our fixtures become much kinder in October. My interpretation of "must-win" is we're fucked if we don't win it, and we wouldn't be whatsoever.

It's not a must-win like, it's a 38 game season and we've had some of our toughest fixtures right at the start. I'd be worried if we were hovering around the bottom at Christmas but until October I was prepared for us to not pick up much at all.

The lad's got everything, if nowt else having a player who's clever enough to know when and where to pass it gives us a massive advantage, given that most of our players don't seem to have a clue in that respect.
