Yeah, but the squad was small enough last season. I know we expect the youngsters to come in and stake their claim for a place and beef up the squad which is fine and i'm fully behind that. But most of those youngsters seem to be in midfield. ( which depth wise is by far the strongest part of the team) We need signings in defense and upfront, if we don't sign these players then i will be hugely disappointed and as a supporter of the club... borderline angry.

Not only that, but we need 3 or 4 players on top of the ones we already have. The numbers in the squad at the moment from a quality and quantity stand point, is quite frankly not good enough if we are going to be competitive in 4 competitions.

Maybe because De Jong has a much higher ceiling than Carroll, actually can play in more than 1 position and actually fits the system we want to play

I really wouldn't be surprised if we buy Hoilett, then it's as Best's replacement. Completely different type of player, but if we are playing the way Pardew keeps alluding to then he will probably fill Best's gap in the squad. Can play wide and central, after Pardew mentioned about copying Spain it really wouldn't surprise me. If Ba and Cisse went to afcon we used Hoilett in a false 9 role. Would be a complete turn-around from the beginning of last season but it wouldn't surprise me.

Said before i'd take Hoilett but there's more important transfers to make than him this summer IMO. As long we get what i would consider the "priorities" it's all good, but i wouldn't want us to chase Hoilett and miss out on other targets which are needed much more.
