If Bigi turns out to be the business (and the reports are looking OK) then I'd say that kind of signing would indeed be the way forward, insofar as it was a cheap buy, you get to mould the player from a young age and they can be bedded into the first team at their own pace. I suspect that'll ultimately be the model for us going forward (interesting topic actually). At the minute we are building (have mostly built) a very strong first eleven and have added some promising back up this summer. Not all are going to make it (as is the case in football in general) but I think with the advent of a much more switched on scouting system we'll find more of these players will make the grade than in previous years. The future of football in the model we "appear" to be working towards is, youth, youth, youth. Bring in young, talented kids and school them yourself. It'll take years to get right and we've balled up in the Academy thing, but I really see this as the way forward both in a football and business sense. Thoughts?

Nobody's more gutted than me, believe me, I had this guy already in the team in my head linking up with Yoyo and Ben 10 down the right hand side but having read everything on this, the Lille forum, twitter feeds and news conferences I just feel they are serious, that he isn't now for sale. They said (or alluded to the fact that) they wanted a replacement in "if" he was to leave and they wanted the money in to do that in good time. Clearly if we rock in close to the window closing, it leaves little or no time for them to get said replacement. To be fair, they have a big old season coming up themselves and I very much doubt they'll want to be in a weaker position going into said season. The time to successfully do this deal comfortably has already past, every week that passes makes it increasingly unlikely in my opinion. That said, I'd be delighted if it does happen but I'm no longer worrying/getting annoyed about it.

With a slightly heavy heart I'd agree with that. Would really like him to fulfill his potential here, but I'm less and less convinced it'll happen for him. I'd say if January comes and he's still "the same" I could see him being shifted on. Then again, Pards may have worked is magic on him and he's going to be the new HBA

I wonder if footballers can have "their game" deconstructed and rebuilt (like a Golfer changing a swing stance etc), think he would benefit from that. Step 1: receive timely pass Step 2: look up at acres of green grass Step 3: run towards goal Step 4: encounter defender? run straight past him Step 5: shoot if in good position or cross to better placed forward It really is that simple

Started focusing on him when he played last season and honestly can't work him out. It's like his brain is two seconds behind his body most of the time. With his pace he should be fit to beat a man in a one-to-one situation but he always seems to want to cut back inside to try and beat him again on the other foot and ends up doing nowt. The amount of times I found myself shouting at the TV was Just use your pace!!! It's like he's caught in two minds about what to do. I'm gutted for the lad because there is "something" there but he's far from where he needs to be (at this level) imo. Shame, but hope we see a Pards inspired change in him this season.

I'm guessing it must be Pardew/Carr who have at least a sizeable input in the maximum offers though, surely? I can't see Dez or Mike sitting and figuring out each player's market value.
