Definitely, but again I draw the Parallel to NUFC. We have been neglected for the whole time Ashley’s been here yet our fans keep going to the games, buying the shirts etc.
-
I don’t see the domestic competitions throwing them out tbh. we are surely going to see a deflation for the left behind clubs though. I can’t see the tv deals commanding such high sums especially the champions league.
-
If this does go ahead the big clubs will all have to join sadly. if not, they will just be left behind financially over the long term. Unfortunately these clubs have everyone by the balls.
-
If you have enough money you can
-
That’s the whole problem. Legally the clubs are the property of the shareholders and they can do whatever they please. I think yesterday was a wake call for fans everywhere. We are no longer fans merely customers of a shit product.
-
As seen in the tweets these clubs don’t care about existing fans. It’s all about the money.
-
To be fair, the premier league are probably fielding calls from the clubs shitting themselves over future revenue drops.
-
I think, your looking at it from the purists perspective. Ultimately, the shitheads generate the most revenue and attract the most sponsors and likely the largest viewing figures. In terms of future growth the game (commercially) can’t really grow much more in Europe and these clubs are looking towards other markets especially Asia and the Middle East.

Uefa will be terrified. Some has to take a hair cut right? I guess the logical targets will be domestic cup competitions. Especially if these minted clubs can make some contributions to everyone else to buy them off. the only thing I can reasonably sure of is, everyone will get a bit more money and the fans will be left holding the bag.
-
Yes it’s linked. But I don’t see that is the actual reason. It’s a pure money/control play as you say. They don’t want to share money with the teams they deem lesser and they want to control the distribution of the money. Covid gives them the excuse to try this as they can sell it through the back channels as a bailout.

You’ve hit the nail on the head here. The way I see it is, football over the last 30 or so years mirrors society pretty damn well. After all, greed is good according to our politicians. And we are “extremely relaxed” about these people getting filthy rich.
-
To an extent yes, but this new structure will compensate for that. They definitely crave guaranteed income, makes it much easier for them to raise more debt. Turns out Spurs didn’t need that loan from the Govt after all
-
Personally, I don’t think it has anything to do with the competition from these clubs. It’s a pure capitalist move to increase revenue. As NUFC fans we have been at the sharp end of this. The game we grew up loving no longer exists. It’s simply another revenue stream to increase portfolio diversification.
-
It seems like UEFA thought it was a negotiation. It was never a negotiation, it was can you match this offer, if not see ya later.
-
It’s more about control than money in the long term at least. As far as these clubs are concerned Uefa are a middleman man who is no longer required. As the clubs became richer and more powerful this kind of thing became inevitable.
-
Imagine if they sign up with say an exclusive gaming partner. And funnel all the gamblers to one place. Imagine what these kinds of rights would be worth.
-
Without a doubt. This all frees the cartel from the rules laid down by Uefa so I expect games to be played at Asian friendly timings to increase the commercial reach. Remember this is business, JP Morgan have to make this huge expenditure into a profit.
-
I’ll be interested to see what happens too. It also depends on the nature of the contracts the clubs have in place. We can be certain that these talks have been going on for years so it depends on how prepared these clubs have been.
-
I thought this too. But ultimately doesn’t it depend on how much they can be paid off? And also, is that a serious threat from UEFA and FIFA? A World Cup without the biggest players. I think we will see some form of settlement where everyone gets a piece of the pie and of course the average fan will end up being the loser.
-
To be clear a very vocal minority are complaining about this. I think we as a club are an excellent cast study as are MK dons. Football fans are basically battered wives at this point.
-
We had so many years as a country to guard against this by including fan ownership and ties to communities but we let the market run its course and now look what has happened.
-
It sounds like a done deal tbh
-
Yea, they are just the employees. I’m guessing it’s just a form of pressure from the governing bodies.
-
The fans don’t matter. They are customers not fans.
