Being clear from relegation is literally mid to upper mid table, anyone from 12th down is usually only 1 or 2 losses from being dragged into it so I stand by what I said. Bruce was a failure and Howe proved that and with the additional purchases already made we should be comfortably upper mid table, when we get at least a RW and a striker, which we will, we'll be pushing 8th up. At this point upper mid is already a huge improvement on previous seasons and a fight for a European place would be a bonus.

I thought your last post was funny but what on Earth is “upper mid table” That’d be top half, no?

  2. He was miles worse than Pardew. At least Pardew knew he was an utter cunt and revelled in it.

Bruce’s self pity and attention seeking :anguish: Give me a smarmy Pards over his disgusting miserable face any day of the week.

    Also, Wood

You know why we paid over the odds for him. It was pure necessity and no one else was available.

And you also know I wasn’t saying the top half finish expectations are setting anyone up for a fall. I meant that having high expectations of loads of huge big money signings despite evidence to the contrary that that will happen and then being disappointed when those made-up signings doing happen is setting yourself up for a fall.

It’s just inventing your own reality and then being disappointed when it doesn’t actually turn out that way.

So we aren’t going to pay over the odds… but we will pay over the odds… but not now, only in January, despite the need being as great now.

The latter part of your post makes no sense, I (and from what I’ve seen a majority of others) haven’t said any of that. Nobody is clamouring for big huge money signings, just hopeful of something better than signings from Championship sides.

    You’re inventing your own argument.

I can sense you’re a little angry, Fanoir.

So you were wrong again then. It’s always easier when we’re both so quick to get to that realisation. Ta.

What resources though? No one knows how much we have to play with for sure. It certainly isn’t all of PIF’s resources.

What are you bleating on about now? It’s an easy comparison to make based on how much we’ve already spent. How many others clubs have been able to match that in the last 7 months?

I can name many more who couldn’t for a variety of reasons.

If you’re disappointed though it’s only you that’s set yourself up for a fall.

The club has already said it would be slow and steady, not paying over the odds etc

They've never once said they are gonna be making bags of huge signings and paying out huge sums.

We paid over the odds immediately with Woods.

I don’t think a top half finish is setting anyone up to fail. As I have said many a time, it was a reasonable target under Ashley if we had a competent manager, nevermind now.

We are entitled to be buying everyone. We are the richest club on the planet etc.

The amount of fans pissing on about how shite our new owners are was expected to be fair. Wasn’t expecting as many on here mind.

Can you show me an example of this? Or have you made this up?

Hard to believe just 12 months ago a sizeable chunk of Newcastle fans would have willingly and genuinely accepted relegation to get rid of Ashley.

Yet here we are. Moaning because we still have 2 positions to cover and only a handful of Internationals to do it.

But that’s what you should do though - you should want to improve and have more success, especially when you have a greater wealth of resources.

I’m sure we’ll look back on this conversation in five years time when people are disappointed to lose the CL final on penalties.

We’ll still rightly be able to comment on it and put criticism forward if it’s required, saying “oh well, don’t forget about the time we were worried about playing Chris Wood upfront” isn’t good enough mitigation if Neymar misses a sitter in the 90th minute, people will still be upset because our expectations will have changed.

  8. People are still judging their expectations based on Ashley. It’s not their fault, tbf. Years of being groomed.

The bare minimum isn’t the aim. This squad even without further investment should be aiming for 10th or higher.

We have the finance and opportunity to fill two important positions and we should do so. That should put us in a strong position for a strong season.

@54was meant to quote you and now it’s not playing ball.

Why can't you though? You can admit that both the squad could do better under Bruce, while also being please about not being drawn into a relegation battle for the first time in 13 years.

It’s not ‘could’ do better under Bruce, it was ‘should’ do better - there is a difference.

The benchline with that squad was midtable. The benchline now with £150m+ expenditure is still midtable?

We were in relegation trouble for most of the season, it was only the last couple of months that saw us safe. That being said we haven't even started this season yet so who's to say where this team could end up with a continuation of the form Howe had us in? An improvement is 12th - 8th and I think Howe could get us there now.

That’s not what you said though. You said you’d be happy just being clear from relegation, which imo would be a failure as a target or achievement.

As I’ll repeat. Many on here said this squad (pre-January additions) was a midtable team and Bruce was a failure based on that. We can’t now suddenly say surviving a season without being drawn into a relegation battle after spending £150m+ would be a success.

  11. I think Cornet would be a good signing FWIW. It’s the fact we’re likely going to have to put Chris Wood on a football pitch that concerns me.

That said, the link to Cornet is tenuous at best and the reason people are concerned is because it’s clear we’re not close to anything.

Not like reefa to get it wildly incorrect though.

Said the same a few pages back, amazing how many short memories we have, just a season without looking over our shoulders and scrambling for that "magical" 40 point mark will be a huge improvement on most of the last 14 years.

It’d be a failure though, finishing 14th without being in relegation trouble. We should be aiming at least for top half this season, it’s not a tough ask with the team and resources we have.

Lets not forget everyone saying Bruce was failing managing a team of midtable quality even before the takeover. We can’t have it both ways.

Hiw many clubs have soent more than us the past 7 month?

How many clubs needed to and have the resources to match?

It might be. But it is genuinely dissappointing that we are 1 week away from the start of the season and are seemingly not close to filling 2 crucial positions in the first team.

Careful. You can’t use words like ‘disappointing’ or you’re a crying bairn.

You knew the plan was a slow build. They even said it themselves. We’ve spent a comparable fortune since PIF got involved.

Anyone expecting Man City investment is RTG levels of deluded.

People still fail to get the whole thing about judging situations on their own merits.

We don’t always need to compare every transfer window and say “ey, it could’ve been worse under Ashley”. We’re able to look at the ambition and resources that we have now and say we could be doing better.
