Heard some bloke ring into Talksport (I know) this morning saying what they really needed and what he wanted was Kenny Dalglish and Phil Thompson in.

Er, messiahs, going back, fans too demanding etc etc? No, they said it was important for the next guy to know Liverpool inside out and have them in his heart blah blah blah.

Funny, that.

There was bound to be a season when Gerrard didn't win all the important games for them eventually. Even with the addition of Torres they rely on him to a greater extent than any other team I've ever seen.

Without those two they're distinctly average, and probably worse than the likes of Villa and Spurs now.

He buys too many defenders and defensive players.

Bump.  Couldn't complain if he got sacked now.

Can they afford it?

Can they afford not too?

The simple fact is that the squad isn't good enough though. I know that's down to him, but it means there's nothing to say the new guy would do much better. If they have to pay him off and don't get CL either, that's a lot of brass lost.

They might just see it out and try force him out in the summer.

Even the old trick of selling Torres behind his back won't work since he's come out and said its a possibility (or something similar) so Liverpool really are stuck with him. He doesn't look like he'll walk in this situation; for me he's the type to walk when things are going great and he feels vindicated for whatever reason, but doing so poorly he'll want to stay for his payoff as he's a huffy fecker.

PS: How red are his cheeks? WTF has he been up to?

Lot of tables tonight, and everyone had five courses.

;D

"Tom Hicks and George Gillett will surely be conscious that Liverpool's habitual Champions League qualification cannot be taken for granted now, in particular when Manchester City are going to such expense to reinvent themselves. The proprietors would not be human if they did not have reservations about Benítez's capacity to reinvent himself to meet that challenge.

It would, of course, be terrifyingly difficult to name a successor who could galvanise the club and do so on modest means. On the other hand, no manager survives for long simply because it is awkward to appoint a replacement. Benítez will have to pull off an astonishing upsurge if he is to survive beyond the next few weeks and months at Anfield."  Guardian

This is not a good time for Liverpool, a failing manager who they can't afford to sack, and looks unwilling to quit.

They shouldn't sack him that would be foolish, he has just fucked up a couple of transfer windows and the team is unbalanced.  Even the best managers have done that.  I think he knows whats wrong with the team, and will look to sort it.  They do look a shadow of the team they were last year but he will turn it around.

Imagine if Gerrard had left 3/4 years ago. Benitez would have been sacked a long long time ago.

Most probably, yeah.

The amount of memories of Gerrard smashing in a last minute winner over the years are endless. Without him they would be a very average side.

Benitez is probably is a decent enough manager, but for Liverpool he's signed a lot of players who didn't make the grade for whatever reason.

If anything Liverpool have been over-performing in recent seasons, and they're now just finding their true level... about the 5th or 6th best team.

Not even that really. Most of them time they've fluked their way to victory, been given a bogus decision or Gerrard has bailed them out. Liverpool only perform (just like their fans) for the final 10mins after Gerrard decides he wants to win the game.

Now Gerrard is off form and Torres is picking up injuries left right and centre, which he always has done, they've got nothing left in the tank especially with the sale of Alonso, and the erratic form and behaviour of Macherano. Carragher going down hill faster than Eddie the Eagle has buggered their defence as well, everything is shite. Players like Babel could be the ones to pull it out for them, fresh legs and ideas, only Rafa has treated him with such disdain and hampered his progression Babel is only interested in his next move.

Someone said all their bad luck is coming at once, evening out for the last 10 years of unreal good luck, i reckon they could be right, but their luck could easily change, string a couple of wins together through the other teams being poor and they morale will lift and their main lucky charm Gerrard could come fighting back. They are only 5pts off 4th and the media are treating it like they've been relegated, ok the momentum is with others, but Liverpool do have the experience of their manager, their players and fans, and that could be vital in the final push.

They need to make some moves in the transfer market, I hear they've brought in Maxi Rodriguez who by all accounts is a good player last time i checked, it could be the spark they need. Liverpool aren't done yet, the end is when they sell Gerrard and Torres, if they do that it will be a long time before they are genuine title contenders and will struggle to be the cup team they are.

Last night just shows, without Gerrard and Torres that team will struggle massively. It isn't like at Chelsea for example where if Drogba and Lampard are out, sure they'll struggle but they have the players who can come in and grind out the result and put in a good shift.

IF Aquilani ever finds his feet in this league he'll be a quality player for them, but its already much too late for them this season, they just have to work their arse off to get themselves into the Champions League.

Signs too many allrounders and not enough truly skillful players. Aquilani looks skillful, but looks too slight for the Pl and will need at least a season to settle and build up the stamina to play in the PL. It ain't the pass the ball around have a coffee break the European leagues are....The intensity must come as a shock.

The once great Liverpool academy has dried up as well. I might be missing someone but really who was their last top 10 prem player they produced?

I know he took a lot of stick last year for rotation, but you can see now that Gerrard and Torres have been overplayed. Along with Masch they are the only world class players in the side.

What for instance is Babel's best position, not sure Rafa is really sure...Scores too many to play on the wing, yet isn't really a striker either. Lucas and Masch can't start together as they are too similar and lack creativity.

They really need another striker, Ngog isn't even as good as the young Spanish lad at Man U who can't get games.

You mean Macheda? (Italian BTW ;))

Babel has bag of pace and tricks, but positionally he's in no man's land, but i'd play him upfront when Torres was out, not as clinical (but who is) but can still run at defenders stretching them out of position like Torres does so well. Unfortunately for them Rafa has destroyed not only Babel's confidence but his desire to play for the club. He's someone who'll flourish at another club, Liverpool was probably too soon for him.

Get your point about rotation, do it and get criticised for dropped points, don't do it and get Torres & Gerrard injured and show you are a one dimensional team; obviously Rafa knew this some time ago and wanted to protect his two biggest assets.
