Words fail Benítez after Valbuena strike punishes meek Liverpool

Andy Hunter at Anfield

Thursday October 4, 2007

The Guardian

Anfield has built its reputation on raucous European atmospheres but an unfamiliar sound accompanied Liverpool down the tunnel last night. Boos reverberated around a stadium unacquainted with defeat in the Champions League proper since Rafael Benítez's Valencia won here in October 2002, and the uncharacteristic response was perfectly in tune with a performance the Spaniard readily accepted as the worst of his Liverpool reign.

You called it Parky. Looking very accurate right now.

I can't believe Rafa is screwing things up with that squad. He is blatantly overdoing things with the changes he keeps making. No one is finding any consistent form.

The man is looking and sounding more clueless with each passing day.

Voronin has looked a good player and Crouch has often looked their best striker.

Not the first big club to claim a point from someone like Pompey.

Pompey have played all of the big four and had a good start despite that.

He's grown a goatee as if to hide behind his incessant managerial blunders.

He started today with Crouch (who touched the ball twice in 60min) and this Voronin character who's a bit like a fat bus driver with a pony tail.

James made one proper save all game.

Torres and Kuyt sat there on the bench. :nope:

He'll be for the chop this summer. bluerazz.gif

the beard looks him look like a right tosser, and he's a miserable twat to go with it.

Can't stand these managers who think they are clever dicks becasue they tinker around with their formations and players.

Can't believe how much slack he gets from the media and fans, they want him shot for the mistakes he makes EVERY START to the season.

There's being a worldclass fuk up like Souness, Rafa is nowhere near that, but is currently ruining Liverpool's best chance of winning the league is well over a decade. If he'd had played full strength teams through the league this season they'd be top, fulls wins apart from the Chelsea draw in which they got ripped. That form would of continued into the CL imo, they've already blow the mental toughness they need for a title challenge.

Have you seen the press and media? He's getting slaughtered every game - no matter what he does he gets criticism.

The slump in form has coincided with Alonso and Agger, our best passers in defence and midfield picking up metatarsal injuries against Portsmouth. Since then we've struggled to control the rhythm of our play. It hasn't helped that both Gerrrard and Carragher are still clearly struggling to get back to full fitness follow their broken ribs/toes. Losing Agger has also meant we've been forced to play Hyypia who looks to have lost pace (if that's possible) forcing the back four to defend deeper and stretching our play.

It's not resting Torres for Birmingham that is the problem no matter how much the press prattle on about it. They could do with analysing the play rather than walking in with the match report half written according to their pre-conceived agenda.

Sissoko not all he cracked up to be then?

Had played very well this season prior to the Marseille game where he was one of ten outfield players to have a shocker - but he's not an Alonso style midfielder and never will be.

Funny that, from reading this forum I was under the impression that no other team ever struggles a little when missing some of their best players.

Who would have thought it huh?

Aye, seems harsh now sacking Roeder after all of the players he had missing through injury.

I think you may well be proved right. I still like and rate the bloke and would have him here if Sam wasn't our manager, in a heart beat. If he his giving more time and more money, he will land the big one for them. Can't see him getting that though if they fail this season which is looking odds on.

Tbh the setup Liverpool have they should be in contention every year for a few tin pots...Don't really see what he's done to the side since he's been there they still struggle if Gerrard isn't playing well or Alonso is injured. The test of a good manager is to understand and impliment his squad to overcome such things especially with that huge squad he now has.

But isn't it the same as Man Utd without Rooney and Ronaldo or Chelsea without Lampard/Drogba - both struggle badly. I think all teams are more reliant on a couple of players than they'd care to admit.

Is it any coincidence that Newcastle dropped off markedly when Shearer was injured in 97/98 or should the second best club side in the country have been able to cope?

As I said above the rotation thing is a bone the media refuse to drop. Today's Telegraph was the first time I've seen any national journalist mention the missing Agger/Alonso as a possible cause of the drop off in form.

Where do you think you might finish this year in the league and CL?
