Barclays Premier League clubs are already concerned about the loss of players for the tournament, which starts on January 20 and ends on February 10, and they will be dismayed that Vogts wants players such as Obafemi Martins, of Newcastle, and John Obi Mikel, of Chelsea, to report for international duty on January 4. “That is the way that things have to be and there will be no exceptions,” Vogts said. “There will be a two-week training camp and all the players will be there. They will not be allowed to arrive later.” Vogts was speaking after Nigeria’s 1-0 defeat by Australia at Craven Cottage on Saturday, a match that was watched by almost 12,000 supporters but that was overshadowed – for Nigeria fans - by the withdrawal of high-profile players such as Kanu, the Portsmouth forward, Yakubu Ayegbeni, the Everton striker, and Mikel. “I know some people say they were not injured but that is not true,” Vogts said. “Maybe if the African Cup of Nations was played in the summer we would not have all these problems.” Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm fairly sure the managers who signed these players realise that the ACN occur during the European regular season. TDF Yes they should, this Competition could be held at any time of the year - so historically it is in Jan and Feb, but one should not bite the hand that feeds you. Surely having a competition in this time would put clubs off buying African talent. It certainly did for Kalusha Bwalya - one of the greatest African players that I have ever had the fortune to see. He ended up only in Qatar. What a pity for the rest of us. I think that many managers would think twice about selecting an African player who represents his country - or even worse persuade him to change international allegiences. To you, perhaps. I dare say many Africans would disagree. As it is, the World Cup is held during the summer break in the big European leagues, which is already pandering to their interests. Can't blame Vogts, to be honest. His team's losing games and his best players are unavailable because of their clubs. I reckon FIFA or the FA's should compensate clubs when their players are unavailable due to internationals. After all, they make billions from their tournaments while the clubs bear all the risk. That would make it fair, in my opinion. After all, you know when you sign an African player that there's a good chance he'll be missing during the ACN, so either grin and bear it or only sign shit Africans. European clubs and countries simply are more important than African ones, they have the best teams and importantly a lot more money. Yes parts of Africa do get hot in the summer but we've had World Cups in searing heat and we accept it, the WC will be in Africa in July 2010 and players will have to deal with it. There's no reason they can't have it in the summer which would suit them better as they would have more time with their players and would also suit European clubs better who ultimately have the money and the power.
