Premier League games to be played abroad?

Recommended Posts

"This is abuse. The rich Premier League is trying to get richer and wants to expand the importance of that league.

"I support the fans 100%," he said. "If I was a fan in England I would say: 'no, please play at home and don't go and exercise your talents abroad'. If the plan includes official league matches then, as a fan, I would protest against this."

Sense from none other than Sepp Blatter.

FA statement

Friday, 15 February 2008.

The FA has listened carefully to the comments made by FIFA President Sepp Blatter regarding the Premier League’s proposal for an international round of fixtures.

This proposal has generated a high level of debate both domestically and with the international football family. While The FA has given full consideration to views expressed by all parties, we must also make our own position on this subject clear.

We can confirm that The FA did speak to FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke about this matter yesterday. We explained that while we had received a verbal summary on the subject, at this time we are not in possession of any detailed proposals from the Premier League to pass on to FIFA.

It was also made clear to FIFA that The FA has some serious reservations about the proposal. We have a responsibility to the whole of English football and we have to consider any wider consequences and implications that this proposal may create.

As a national association we also recognise the authority of FIFA and its Executive Committee.

We have heard the criticism from supporters and the objections raised by others in the worldwide football family.

The FA has worked extremely hard for several years to improve our relationships and standing with FIFA and UEFA, and has largely succeeded.

Clearly we do not want this extensive work to be damaged. We also do not want the Premier League’s proposal to affect England’s 2018 World Cup bid in any way. At this time, due to The FA’s strong international relations, we do not believe it has.

This matter will be discussed at The FA’s scheduled Board meeting which will take place next Thursday, 21 February. This will provide an opportunity for The FA Board to fully debate the subject as a group for the first time.

The FA’s Chairman Lord Triesman said: “I am determined that our international and domestic relations must be sustained at the highest level, and I will not countenance any damage to those relations.”

Problem is I don't think it would have got this far in terms of a discussion if they couldnt do whatever they wanted regardless of what the FA, UEFA and FIFA think

I don't think they can do anything without the FA's say-so. And the FA without UEFA's say-so, and UEFA without FIFA's say-so.

I'm not sure it can be that clear cut.  Do you think they wouldnt have realised that

1)  They would need permission from these people, if they do

2) That these people would say no

Its still a shit idea mind

None of those moaning are bothered about the fans in the slightest, all they care about is themselves and they would piss on us if it suited them.

I'm not bothered about this 39th game if it helps the clubs in bringing more money and better players into our league, if it's just going to boost players wages then forget it.

As a foreign fan (Australian) I'd love to see more premiership teams abroad.  Not in this stupid 39th game crap but something pre season but properly organised.  Perhaps PL teams playing the winners of various foreign leagues, countries chosen for PL teams by their position in the league.

which needs bigger wages

True, if you get a better player then you pay more in wages but I meant the income all going to the players rather than on transfers and wages.

neither of which benefits the club or the fans

Surely the most important point about this is not that there is a game played abroad instead of in the UK, it is that by having a 39th game and introducing seeding for the top clubs, and having this game contribute to the final points total, the PL would be effectively invalidating the very concept behind the league - that everyone plays each other twice, and at the end, the club with the most points is the champion.

If, say, Arsenal finish one point behind Man United, but Man United's 39th game was against Derby, and Arsenal's was against Tottenham, then Arsenal fans can justly point out that although they didn't win the league, they had a harder set of fixtures.

All the rest of the stuff about playing it away from the fans for the benefit of replica shirt wearing Taiwanese people pales into significance with the fact that it would be pissing all over the league system which has served us (and world football, for that matter, as ours was the first) for well over a century.

And all in the name of money.

The scary thing is, the 39th game would be a test of the waters; they probably want a much bigger share of the games played overseas. But they'll do it gradually, sneakily.

They're just giving us a little finger before they eventually fist us.

Oh, and another thought, what's the betting Scudamore floated this absurd proposal - he MUST have known FIFA would never allow it - knowing it would not happen, but with the intention of it making it easy to slip in some watered down idea in in its place whilst we're all wiping our brow in relief?

A kind of "this is much more palatable than it could have been" situation.
