Relegation - will we or won't we? *NO FIXTURE LISTS PLEASE*

Recommended Posts

of course i want us to stay up, but i dont know why but part of me thinks we'll only be a good team again after going down. wed have a completely fresh start and hopefully all the deadwood would f*** off and keegan could build his own team. lets hope we stay up and they f*** off

Getting relegated would finish us.

Worked for Blackburn.

There was no such thing as inflation and 'the top four' then, though. Not to such a scale as it is now, anyway.

Ipswich, Derby, Leicester

West Ham, West Brom, Sunderland

Leicester, Leeds, Wolves

Crystal Palace, Norwich, Southampton

Birmingham, West Brom, Sunderland

That's the last few seasons' relegated teams. If we were to get relegated, we'd be no different. We'd be fodder, just like them lot. Some have collapsed entirely, two or three have come back in and gone straight back down again (and will continue to do so), there's only one there who have come back and done something (not a lot in realisty), and that's West Ham.

Under Bobby, we were on the very brink. Even under Souness, crazily - we were arguably even closer to winning something - we could have gone on to win that UEFA Cup with a bit more luck; we weren't that far away. Since then we've deteriorated but never in any real long-term threat, until this season.

If we were to go down we'd more than likely end up like Leeds or Southampton than West Ham or Blackburn, imo.

You don't see any major difference between this club and all the others you mentioned?.. ???  What do you think gives a team the best chance of staying in the Premier League when they come up?, what's kept West Ham up and moved them on?..  Money, do you think our attendances would dwindle to the likes of the teams you mentioned if we went down and came back up?

Plenty of teams that have gone down have had money/good fanbases. It's no guarantee for promotion again. The Championship is a good league.

Club size means very little when it comes to relegation and promotion imo. We'd lose all our high-profile players. Martins, Owen, Viduka, Emre, N'Zogbia, Milner, Beye, Faye, Enrique, maybe even Given, would be gone. We've got very little in reserve, ie youngsters. Yeah we're working on that but it's much harder if you're not in the Premiership. Yeah we've got money but again, it's much harder to attract quality players (well, nigh on impossible to attract top quality players), we'd be in the same market as everyone else; West Brom, Wolves, Ipswich, etc.

I really think it would be difficult for us to get straight back out of that league. Fortunately, i think we're too good to go down.

We've been playing God awful since just before Christmas, without any let-up, but this Newcastle being relegated would be a travesty.

I was talking more about staying up after promotion rather then coming straight back up.  Though personally I think we'd still be way ahead of the likes of West Brom and Ipswich ect when it comes to attracting players.

What I really am wondering about most is why do you think we'd be "more like Leeds or Southampton than West Ham or Blackburn".  What do the likes of West Ham or Blackburn have that this club doesn't?

I don't think any club that's relegated from the Premiership after years of being Premiership regulars is ever really in a stable condition.  They inevitable lose lots of players, cut costs and rebuild.  Exactly what we'd do, if anything it could actually be the catalyst to stabalise us, though obviously I'd prefer to keep trying to do that in the Premiership :)

We need to be clear before the last 2 games, if we have to get anything out of Everton and Chelsea we are doomed

The Blackburn, Reading, Birmingham and Sunderland games are vital

Our next two home games simply have to accumulate 6 points. That's absolutely imperative. A point at Birmingham in-between wouldn't be bad, providing we do win the two home ones. 7 from 12 points would be a decent return from those four games, and should help considerably given that we'd be playing two teams that are below us.

Derby:  Down.

Fulham:  Down.

Can anyone honestly see all of Reading, Birmingham, Wigan, Bolton, Sunderland and Middlesbrough (if we're in a relegation battle then so are they)  finishing above us?  Look at the current form table - we've only taken two from the last six games.  But then you have Reading who are six points below us and have taken 0 points from the last six.  Birmingham may have got a point yesterday, but they're still only 3 points from six games.

And if you look at our last six games, we've had Man Utd twice, Arsenal away and Villa away.  All tough games, which most of the teams below us would lose too.

There is no way we'll go down.

Good analysis. NUFC going down is unrealistic.

Too many teams below us in both in terms of points and quality to really question our Premiership status.

But, the fact that 22,5% here think we ARE GOING DOWN should make both Ashley and Keegan think hard what to do nextsummer. Otherwise, the next season may be very unpleasant.
