What's Ashley doing - lost 129Mill on the markets last week?

Recommended Posts

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has lost a reported £129m gambling on financial markets sparking fears he could be about to sell the club.

So says the NOTW but also reported on the TV. It may be his money but playing the markets to the tune of 129Mill in a week of market turmoil may appear reckless to some. I don't accept this as a sign that he may sell the club but I'm sure KK would have liked to have had some of that money for summer transfers.

The craic is he lost the money on HBOS (Halifax, Bank of Scotland).

Not as much as Joe Lewis who lost £500m buying up shares in Bear Stern.  That won't affect Spurs, Ashley's loss won't affect Newcastle either imo.  They can both afford to take a hit.

quite right, the bloke should just earmark his entire wealth for NUFC aswell, selling his huge house and living in a carvan at the least.

If he carries on the way he has reputedly been doing on the stock markets, it won't be long before that whole caravan deal happens for real...

Aye. We're not in the South-East of England.

Mike Ashley would only have lost that money on shares if he sold them now. The shares will probably recover over the next few years. Anyway, £129m represents something like 10% of his personal wealth. Newcastle winning yesterday has kicked up a hornets nest of negative stories in the media today: -

Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins is on the verge of handing in a transfer request if things don't improve at the club over the summer. (News of the World)

Meanwhile Martin Jol has emerged as the leading contender to take over at Newcastle - if Kevin Keegan fails. (Sunday Mirror)

He only loses the money if there is a margin call. Otherwise it's a paper loss. Markets are cyclical, what goes down will normally come back up (you know, a bit like Watford/Derby/Bolton/Mackems!!).

The fact that the N O T W decided to put it on the back page along with our 1st win in ages proves they hunt for the negatives. I wonder what they would of wrote had he won the same amount or indeed if they would of mentioned it(probably a small mention hidden in the financial section). The only thing that suprises me is that reporter A.Dunn didn't write it.

Somebody is feeding the press with negative stories about Ashley. Scarcely a month goes by without some rumour emerging about him trying / needing to sell.

Presumably it's someone with a grudge, but I can't think who that could be.

It'll be Jamie Redknapp. Did you see how Louise managed to get £100k out of him just like that? Blatantly knobbing.

Did I read somewhere that the Man City chairman is a horrific human rights abuser?

Oh no I didn't, obviously not important enough to make the rags. Mike Ashley's lost some money though. CRISIS IN TOON!!!

Fuck off.

You mean the man credited with bringing Elano & Petrov to English football?

Why would losing 130 million quid force a billionaire/ multi billionaire ( not sure which) to sell a club that isn't exactly likely to have made him a profit in the few months he has owned the club? People like Ashley can afford to lose that sort of money, what crap reporting.

We all expect the negative press, it is slightly concerning that we seem to have a bit of an impulsive owner & a manager who we all know to be impulsive. At some point they will clash.

I wouldn't have thought that last week was the best to go looking to make a quick killing in shares but it may give a bit more of an insight into what makes Ashley tick.

If he's looking for thrills n spills he's come to the right place.

Aye, he's here so he can indulge in some short-selling...

The HBOS  shares should recover quite well. They only went down because some traders spread  false rumours about their demise to make a packet out of the ensuing panic.

he didn't have shares,it was spread betting
