Fuck, this is pretty hard considering we haven't had any youngsters coming through but I'll give this one to Harper. I was always iffy about him because of his previous gaffes but he's been good this season.

Jose Enrique. It'd be Zoggy but he didn't keep up his early season form, and the fact that he hasn't played a part in a period where we've been at our best all season hurts his candidacy.

12. How can we improve Midfield. Our defensive failures were as much to do with the midfield as they were the defense. Our attacking failures were as much to do with the midfield as they were the strikers. We've got good personnel everywhere but midfield; there's nowt there.

Habib Beye

 

2. Most improved player

Michael Owen. After suffering some bad injuries and missing loads of matches, Owen has recently shown himself to be the player we thought we were buying in 2006. While Injuries have affected his games (pace), he has shown that he still knows where the goal is, and under Keegan, he seems to have acquired a genuine feel for the club, and appetite again.

Jose Enrique

 

4. Goal of the season

Michael Owen vs Spurs - the run by Martins, managing to stay on his feet after a poor tackle, the pass and dummy/slight flick by Viduka, and the great finish by Owen - a well made goal, involveing all three forwards.

 

5. Highlight of the season

Beating Spurs 4-1 at WHL - a quite unexpected, but very deserved result.

 

6. Low point of the season

Conceding 6 goals in 45 minutes at Old Trafford. I did wonder if the team would/could recover, and that we may actually be bad enough to go down.

 

7. Best pre-match pub

Dont get to the match too often, but when I do, I like a pint (or three) in the Three Bulls.

50,000 people singing "Cheer up Roy Keane........"  in the last few minutes against Sunderland - very loud, very clear - and then seeing Roy's Face on TV.

At least 5 or 6 new, quality signings. In January we made a few young/youth signings for the future - this summer we need to concentrate on bringing in players who can go straight into and improve the first team/squad.

Happier - Future feels a lot brighter with Keegan back, and hopefully strong backing from the board.

The players (Owen in particular) looking so happy when they score/the team wins under Keegan. A genuine good feeling around the club/team again.

At the time, it was that bloke who was very clearly caught on MOTD/TV cameras shouting 'You dont know what you're doing' at Sam Allardyce. I just felt that we should have been getting behind the team, not turning on the manager in such a manner. I was of course proved wrong!!

Anyone who can improve the team/squad! (A cop-out, but I could list any amount of 'fantasy' singings!!

Chris Hughton - Our recent revival coincided with his arrival, and his part in the revival and in particular our better defensive displays/clean sheets hasn't been recognised enough. Think he has definitely had a positive impact.

At the time, I thought yes - but looking at how long the team took to turn around under Keegan, it was clear that confidence/morale, etc were at rock bottom - and I now believe that had he stayed any longer than he did, then we would have been relegated this season - so No - in the bigger picture, he had long enough.

 

24. Is Kevin Keegan the right man to manage Newcastle United now?

Yes - he has cleraly restored the confidence in the players own abilities, has them playing decent football, and most importantly, the players/team seem to be enjoying playing football for Newcastle United again.

 

25. Sam Allardyce's performance (out of 10)

3.5 - good start to the season - did well in preseason in difficult circumstances (the takeover/uncertainty over funds), and brought in a few good players in Beye, Enrique and Faye. However, after the decent start, persiting with a formatioin/systme that just didn't work, and playing players who weren't performing (Smith) despite results, ultimately led to his downfall.

 

26. Kevin Keegan's performance (out of 10)

9 - Has done what Keegan does best - makes players feel good about themselves, and the club - understands what we as supporters want, and is possibly the only person who could have come in and sorted us out in the circumstances.

 

27. Do you think the current formation has a long-term future rather than 4-4-2? Yes/No

Playing negative football under Allardyce, 4-3-3 would never work - but Keegan has shown that with the right players in the right (but in Owen's case unfamiliar) positions, it can work - and we seem a more dangerous team playing with 3 up front.

 

28. Does Newcastle United get a fair press? Yes/No

No - we seem to be the favoured 'easy target'. I belive Shepherd and (Douglas) Hall are to blame. It seemed to begin after the NOTW sting on them, and never really stopped. In recent years, they added fuel to the fire, and we now seem to be the National and sometimes local press' whipping boys. Hopefully soem positive performances on the pitch next season can give the hacks something else to write about.

 

29. Would you like Charles N'Zogbia to still be at Newcastle United next season? Yes/No

Yes, but only if he wants to be (and he clearly doesn't), and his attitude improves. But I wouldn't sell him to another English club unless it was crazy money.

Yes - while we still need to show some sustained form, and he needs to prove backing for Keegan, it got rid of Shepherd - and I believe that had Shepherd stayed any longer, the clubs future was in serious threat.
