If there's any Newcastle fans who've voted "couldn't give a shit" about the chairman of their club changing, then they want a good bumming.

EDIT: This isn't me offering to dish them out, by the way, despite what cunts like Shak will tell you.

Bastard, I was just about to say are you offering them out.

You would have voted "couldn't give a shit" then, wouldn't you? :pow:

How much time would Mort need to spend here to be chairman?  I've worked at companies where the chairman hardly ever walked through the door.

Can't see that going down well at all, to be honest.

There's already the growing feeling of NUFC being "run from London", which isn't a nice one, and which will be used as a big stick to beat people with if things don't go well again next season - and maybe rightly so.

Being chairman isn't a job where you need to spend 24/7 in the office and we don't know how much time he's spent up here considering he's supposed to have 2 houses, one in London and one up here.

He may have been in London most of the last 12 months for all we know.

.com reckon he might already be gone.

Nah, they just read it here:

Megalink

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is expected to respond to the departure of chairman Chris Mort, who is returning to his London law firm Freshfields, as revealed in Sports Agenda, by upgrading deputy chairman Derek Llambias.

Llambias, a West Ham supporter, only recently left his role as managing director of Fifty London, a capital gambling club, to join the Ashley team at St James' Park - with the move from casino boss to Premier League football club chairman an unusual one to say the least.

It is understood that Mort, who is paid by the hour, always intended to move back to Freshfields when the time was right. Another of Ashley's unorthodox appointments, player recruitment boss Tony Jiminez, a property developer, was like all good Chelsea fans cheering on his team in Moscow.

Wherever Ashley finds his Newcastle operatives, it's not near the Toon.

I think i'd rather he stayed, as we need stability at the club, but like i said earlier - we don't know him well enough to make a proper decision about it. He doesn't come across as much of a football man for me, but is obviously someone with excellent business sence.

They got at least one thing wrong, he wasn't paid by the hour as he had a 12 month salaried contract reported to be worth £1 million.  Mort was on roughly a third of what Smith earned yet scored the same number of goals and was only about 2 shots on target behind him.

If we'd had Mort in midfield we'd probably have won the fair play league & qualified for europe as a result

Was told he might be on his way

It's not losing him thats important but replacing him with someone who has a decent understanding of the workings of the game - transfers etc.

We don't need another chairman who might cause us to miss out on transfer targets while he learns the ropes.

precisely

No comments on the fact that the new chairman gets twice as much as the old chairman got criticised for taking despite presiding over the club's worst season in the premiership, sacking a manager mid season without a replacement lined up, and failing to land any of the new manager's transfer targets (all things the old chairman would surely have been crucified for)?

Not actually sure that Mort had a lot of say in the sacking of BSA. I'm pretty sure we've finished lower than 12th too.

Not defending Mort btw, cause i'm don't really know what he did to deserve any praise or criticism tbh.

No great feelings about Mort one way or the other, but the one thing about him that did irritate me slighly was the fact that every time he opened his mouth he seemed to contradict the last thing he said. ???

Well er yes    He was working as a partner at Freshfields and £1 million a year was probably about what he would have been on there, so I guess Ashley had to match it to get him to do the job as a short term secondment. The cause of the poor season can and has been debated at length. Whether Keegan rescued us from something worse or whether we would have finished higher if we'd stuck with BSA is the subject of a few multi page threads on here. What is certainly true is that there wasn't a replacement for BSA lined up and that smacks of incompetence, especially as it was a mid season sacking and we were far from safe from relegation. Our pulling power for players of the calibre KK is targetting isn't that great due to our performances in the past few years so I don't know whether Mort can be blamed for that.

Most of those can be blamed on the appointment of the previous managers by the previous chairman though. Unless you want to blame Mort for the poor state Souness/Roeder/Allardyce left the club in?
