Danny Guthrie signed from Liverpool on 4 year deal

mascherano is a bit of a monster iyam, very strong, imposing and a non stop runner.

at this stage of development, i see guthrie as more of a scholes (without the goals) or emre type, lots of short and first time passes, darting around markers, nice touches and turns and so on, but im not sure he'll develop further in that direction. i dont think you can pin him down to one role or another, if he finds a niche he will do so naturally a couple of years down the line rather than have it imposed on him now.

Just goes to show how subjective football actually is, we both see completely different types of players in the same person.

Ashley needs to break the bank for Lassana Diarra if he really is available in January. Get in early and offer him big wages to sign before the CL clubs bother stumping up the cash.

Makes my mouth water at the thought of him and Guthrie in our central midfield - we wouldn't know the meaning of being sloppy or pushovers in the centre of the park with those two there. Right now, it'd be one of the better central midfields outside the top four. In a few years time, it could easily be the best outside the top four.

Well worth the £10-15m asking price Pompey have supposedly set.

We could have had him.  :sadnod:

Then sold him on for this rediculous amount. It certainly fits into the new approach by the club.

Much difference between this and when we sold Woodgate after just 18 months here for a 50% profit?

Quite a lot yes. Woodgate's injury record being the main difference as to why the deal was too good to turn down around the time. Plus we were more ambitious than Portsmouth at the time, we never really needed to sell Woodgate. So yes, I'd say there was quite a lot really. Although I never ever actually said there was any comparison needed so not sure why you feel the need to even suggest there was.

Have we actually sold on any of our recent signings for a ridiculous amount, or is this just an urban myth put about by UV & associates?

Please don't say Milner

If we kept Sam Allardyce yes.

And stumped up the reported 90k he was demanding....

Wasn't he only demanding that simply because we had no manager?

Is that right? Cant say i remember it too well to be honest.

I can only think of 4, maybe 5 clubs in the entire world whose players dont have a price. Having said that i think you might be right about the Spurs thing, the only thing is that i dont think we'd be a club looking to sell but would sell for the right deal.

Which players did Spurs sell willingly? Robbie Keane for £20m to Liverpool? That was daylight robbery, I'll bet most Liverpool fans would rather have the money back. Berbatov refused to stay, he wasn't sold through choice or to make a profit. I don't see anything devious or miserly in those deals which is what you are implying, in fact Spurs have spent big on top players like Bentley and Modric which is hardly penny-pinching behaviour.

Most clubs struggle to keep their young players when the big 4 come calling, not because they want to cash in on them but the players make it difficult to keep them, when that's the case the only real option for the selling club is to screw as much money as they possibly can out of the buying club.

The only players I can think that Spurs have sold on for a big profit were Keane, Berbatov and Carrick, all 3 made it clear they wanted to move on so Spurs held out for as much as they could.

Agreed. Unless a player wants to go id be wary of selling them, unless of course the deal IS ridiculous.
