Rooney to miss start of the season.

Wayne Rooney's start-of-season jinx looks set to rear its ugly head again with Sir Alex Ferguson concerned that the Manchester United striker will sit out the Premier League opener with Newcastle United.

Ferguson feels Rooney and Michael Carrick will both be out of the starting XI for the Community Shield clash with Portsmouth, live on Setanta Sports, after picking up a virus in Nigeria, and a question mark has been placed over Rooney's involvement in next weekend's game at Old Trafford as well.

Even though United's stay in the African country was short-lived, as they played a friendly against Pompey, it is believed both players contracted an illness.

Rooney has an unhelpful habit of missing the opening of new campaigns. He did so after Euro 2004 when still recovering from his foot injury, was suspended in 2006 after being sent off in the Amsterdam and broke his metatarsal in United's first game of last season against Reading.

Ferguson does not expect the former Everton striker to be available for the clash with Kevin Keegan's Magpies on Sunday, August 17.

"I don't know whether we will have a team ready," complained Ferguson. "Nani is suspended, Anderson is in the Olympic Games and I doubt if Rooney will be fit for the start of the season with the virus he's had.

"It's a virus picked up in Nigeria, I believe, not a nice one.

"Carrick's come in this morning and he may play a part of the game on Sunday.

"They've said it's a bad virus and Wayne's not back in yet, he's not been training. It's been a long time."

Maybe we could send Alan Smith out on loan to them?

With a clause insisting that he plays against us?

We'll even pay his wages, as long as that clause is sorted.

Their own boards reckon the following are all out for our game:

-----

Carrick

Hargreaves

Park

Anderson

Nani

Saha

Rooney

Ronaldo

Welbeck

Manucho

Dong

-------

It's still Man Utd and it's still at Old Trafford but that list makes things look a lot better.

It's manure at OT.

What will be worse? Being made to look an absolute joke by their top players or taken to the cleaners by a bunch of kids?

Still hope we will win, like.
