Can someone remind me why SWP would necessarily want to move to us over Everton or Man City? Both can offer first team european football (if city beat that poor Danish team), same wages/perks i'd imagine, higher finishes last season in the Prem.

He's said he doesn't want to go back to Citeh because of the regime, we can offer more wages than Everton, and KK was the man who made him.

All this talk of clubs being in Europe is a red herring when it comes to the likes of Everton. They can provide a guaranteed 1 year out of a 5 year contract in Europe. Not all that enticing really.

Milner is one year into a new four-year deal. I don't think it's unreasonable at all for the club to be telling him to f*** off if wants a payrise already (and based on what anyway?). And why should we look to sell him? KK wants to keep him, and we'd have to pay him his loyalty bonus. Force him to act if he's so demanding.

It doesn't benefit Milner leaving it until this late in the transfer window. Milner has been very professional about this, not like other players who have wanted to leave and left the club in a weaker position. If the club is left with either no time to get a replacement, or with an unhappy player on it's hands, then it's the clubs own fault for not sorting it out sooner.

It doesn't benefit Milner? It forces the club to do business right here and now. As you mentioned, KK obviously rates him, so no problem there. The club gave him a new long-term deal just last summer, so no problem there.

As I see it, this has come completely out of the blue. We don't want to sell him but he wants to leave regardless.

I can't see how the club should have predicted this arising, unless you know something about the situation I don't?

Why are people having a go at Villa. They didn't need to tap him up they have wanted him for ages.

The guy wants to go so let him go. I swear we could buy a better player for £1 million. Get over it.

He is never a first teamer here, but will be at Villa so fair enough.

As far as the trasnfer request goes, in hindsight, maybe he has just done this so we do not have to give him a loyalty payment, which is fair enough.

For what it's worth I think Keegan has been bigging him up to get a better fee for him. I thinkt he same tactic has been used regarding Smith also.

I cannot wait for who we will be bringing in as a replacement, especially as our signings this summer have been gold so far.

name me a better player that you could get for £1mil.

Palacios initially cost Bruce 1 million Euros and there are many more out there.

ah right, problem solved then. lets just go and get one of those "many more" sell Milner for £10mil and we're laughing!

Precisely! That is what the scouting network is for.

Bassong and Guthrie combined will be less than half of what we will likely get for Milner. That in itself is a joke.

We desperately need players in, especially if Milner leaves.

Absolutely.

and how much are we forking out for our “recruitment team”? – start earning it soon methinks!!!!!!!!!!!

They've probably all earnt their wages with Gutierrez.

what even when you consider how many players have left in the summer when we had a small squad already? Hold on to your seats it’s going to be a bumpy ride unless we get bodies in – good ones preferred.

They've saved us at least £5m on Jonas' asking price, and that is probably more than their yearly wage, hence they have earned their wages (if we are using a cost benefit analysis of course)

hit the nail on the head, this is what arsenal have done for years, sell players when they want to leave and then replace them with newer younger players

Let's face it, James Milner can't cross his legs, never mind a football.

Best i saw him play was that loan spell at villa, gonna be a player that goes elsewhere and excels in a Jon Dahl Thomasson type of way? hes a talented player, just needs to put it all together

we have spent around 20 million on jonas, colocini, bassong and guthrie, we spent the same on boumsong and luque

complete contrast tbh

Not seen that about him not going back to City and I'm sure Everton will be able to match what we'll offer him wages wise, both of which I would imagine would be lower than what he is on at Chelsea.

rubbish, it’s all about players at our disposal, but I presume the club know this, but Milners actions are not what a club needs while they are having trouble shifting season tickets. It’s going to be a bit crazy in the next few days!!!!

Jonas would have been 1-2mil in signing on payment as was Guthirie and Bassong in terms of transfer fee. Colo was 8 rising to 10.3 with addons

So an outlay of about 12-13mil which could be almost wiped out with Milners sale

Well this is a be of a shocker. I've got kind of mixed feelings about it, I have never been one of these Milner bashers but I feel we are still waiting for the player to reach his potential. Then I remind myself he's still only 23.

If we get 10million plus for him, I guess we don't have much choice in the matter, but if Leeds are taking a sizable chunk out of that say 25%, then we probably want to be holding out for a little more. If Villa or Liverpool or anyone else don't want to pay that, then fine we'll hang onto the guy.

My feeling is that, we won't get what we want for him, he'll stay and KK will work on him, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he signed a new contract in the new year.

From a squad numbers points we would be f***ed, well and truely, the latest quotes from KK do not sound particuarily encouraging that the "couple of players" are in the bag. I'm starting to get extremely worried now.

Just heard the Milner news, and haven't had time to read through this thread, but my gut response is as follows: where on earth are we going to find a genuine replacement who tries very hard; is fit and usually injury-free; seems like a nice enough lad; can't cross on a consistently accurate basis to save his life; frightens the living shit out of those in Row Z with the majority of his shots and set pieces; and has to beat a player 5 times in order to almost get past him?

In other words, if we can get the sorts of sums that have been bandied about in the press, then I say we take the money and run ... just as long as we have someone decent who we can run to in the next few days, of course, as our squad is obviously (rice) paper thin.

Valencia

Benayoun

SWP

Lennon

Would be happy with any of those as replacement.

Agreed. Lennon is hugely underrated these days IMO.

Would probably be my 2nd choice out of those behind Valencia, not the best delivery always but constant threat of his pace is just as important I reckon.

http://sport.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Football/2008/08/27/Prem-MON-refuses-to-comment-on-Milneris-looking-for-new-players/

Martin O’Neill is remaining tight-lipped on speculation that Newcastle winger James Milner could be on his way to Aston Villa.

The England Under-21 international handed in a transfer request at St James’ Park on Wednesday morning, sparking rumours he could be set for a return to Villa.

The 22-year-old spent a season on loan at Villa Park from The Magpies for the 2005-06 campaign and appeared to be close to sealing a permanent switch when O’Neill took over, but he was recalled to the North East before a transfer could be finalised.

And with Milner’s shock request to leave Newcastle, Villa have been put firmly in the frame as a contender for his signature.

That is something O’Neill has refused to comment on, but he has admitted he hopes to bring in some new faces before the transfer window closes on Monday.

“I couldn’t tell you anything about that,” O’Neill told reporters when directly asked if he was looking to snap up Milner. “What I can tell you about is that we’d like to try and make some signings between now and the transfer deadline.

“We’ve got a good number of targets in mind, and those may or may not materialise. That wouldn’t be any different to any Premier League football club.

“We wouldn’t mind trying to add to the squad if at all possible.”

When probed about the failed permanent transfer of Milner to Villa Park two summers ago, O’Neill continued to dodge the issue of the player's imminent future.

“That’s absolutely correct and that was two years ago,” said O’Neill when reminded of the summer of 2006.

“It didn’t materialise at that time so I just go back and say to you that we would like to try and add to the squad if at all possible. We’re making every effort to do so, and we wouldn’t be the only club.

“It is a pointless exercise to talk about players, either coming into the club or potentially going out. We don’t really want to lose anybody, if it’s at all possible.

“If we are unable to add some players then we will go with what we have.”

We have two who can slot in. N'Zogbia on the left Jonas on the right. We then need backup for both which can be sorted easily I'm sure.

Don't forget the other sales we made, Rozy and Emre combined 5 - 6 mill, I would have thought.

I'm sick to fuck of this transfer window. I'm happy with the players we have bought but we need alot more and the clock is ticking. If we manage to get 3 in it will be a miracle, 2 at the very most IMO.
