Tooj
Imagine a small-town Cypriot team winning in the capital of Greece to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League. Fairytale stuff, innit? Something that Kevin Keegan dreams are made of.

Nobby
The history of Famagusta (the place) and the football team itself is crazy, just been reading up on Wiki. wow During the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus of 14 August 1974 the Mesaoria plain was overrun by Turkish tanks and in two days the Turkish Army was in Famagusta. The town had been completely evacuated by its Greek population who fled before the invading army and after the town had been bombed by the Turkish air force. Unlike other parts of Turkish-controlled Cyprus, the Varosha section of Famagusta was sealed off by the Turkish army immediately after being captured and remains in that state today. The Greek Cypriots who had fled from Varosha were not allowed to return, and journalists are banned. It has been frozen in time with department stores still full of clothes, now many years out of fashion, and hotels empty but still fully equipped. Swedish journalist Jan-Olof Bengtsson, who visited the Swedish UN battalion in Famagusta port and saw the sealed-off part of the town from the battalion’s observation post, called the area a 'ghost town'. He wrote in Kvällsposten on September 24, 1977), "The asphalt on the roads has cracked in the warm sun and along the sidewalks bushes are growing [...] Today, September 1977, the breakfast tables are still set, the laundry still hanging and the lamps still burning [...] Famagusta is a ghost-town." and it is still like that today. Cranes remain where they were in 1974.

Guest sicko2ndbest
Saw the coastline in the summer, and photos of the town. The streets are grassland, buildings half finished. Turkish people were living in the houses of cypriots at one point!

Turkish people were living in the houses of cypriots at one point! well of course they lived in the houses of cypriots. What were they going to do? knock them down and build turkish houses? FYI in the last few yrs the borders have opened, and greek cypriots have been going back up north to check up on their land and homes, and there have been a few touching stories whereby turkish families opened their homes to the previous greek owners, and handed over personal belongings, furniture and photos etc... Hope there's a resolution some time soon

thenige
Anorthosis chief held over financial irregularities Andreas Panteli, the president of Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta, has been remanded in custody for three days in light of accusations of fraud and embezzlement. Police said he was arrested late on Friday night after a complaint by members of the board over the alleged theft of €418,498 (£345,000) and a separate attempt to extract €500,000 from the Champions League group B contenders. The 48-year-old, who denies the allegations, said: 'There were never any financial discrepancies. Any actions were taken in the full awareness of the board of directors and were always done with the best interests of the club at heart.' And we thought FFS was bad - looks like Ketsbia is already getting used to managing a club with a shambles of a board room - needed experience if he ever wants to lead the Toon!
