Clifford in Keegan talks

South Africans want King Kev and Clifford

Last updated: 4th October 2008

Simon Clifford has confirmed to Sky Sports News that Kevin Keegan will return to the club if the South African consortium, he is involved with, takes control at St James' Park.

Clifford along with Jonathan Cleland, who is the Scottish-based businessman heading up the South African bid, met with Keegan earlier this week.

Lifelong Middlesbrough-fan Clifford, who enjoyed a brief stint as coach at Southampton under Clive Woodward's charge, would become director football at Newcastle if Cleland's group took charge.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Clifford confirmed talks with Keegan had gone well.

"Our number one priority is to return Kevin to the club and we had a very good meeting on Monday," he told Sky Sports News.

"I know there are other consortiums looking at the club as it is a terribly attractive proposition and I am under no illusion that Kevin may speak to them also but we did have a mutual interest in working together."

Cleland confirmed on Friday he was heading up the South African led consortium, although the backers remain a mystery after leading businessmen Johann Rupert, Brian Joffe and Vivian Imerman all denied involvement.

Director of football + Keegan = fail.

For the life of me I cant believe they would even begin to contemplate having a DOF AND bring KK back to be part of it.

If they do then every single one of them, including KK, deserve to be shot.

I am not sure if he is quoted as saying he would have that role so hopefulyl its the journalist twisting things.

Genuinely a terrifying thought

It can work if the responsibilities are clearly defined.

Clifford has always been 100% a youth coach. He is only interested in youth coaching. I couldn't see him stepping on KK's shoes.

Ego's are amazing things though and once they start to grow, thats when the troubles start.

Not 100% true, as he is manager of Garforth Town which is not a youth coach job.

Not impressed by the prospect of this Clifford bloke.

He was in Newcastle days before Keegan left.

Garforth are 3rd bottom of there League.

In 2003 Clifford purchased the Northern Counties East Football League First Division club Garforth Town. At the time of the purchase Clifford expressed the desire to take the club, then at the tenth level of the football pyramid, into the FA Premier League within twenty years. The club have made good progress, gaining two promotions during Clifford's three seasons as manager. Clifford has managed to attract a number of his high profile friends to play for the team including: Lee Sharpe, Sócrates and Careca. The club now plays in the new Unibond Northern league.

Still not exactly a bad record, is it?

Not at all, as I've said many times its just a title, the role that person is actually responsible for is much more important and telling then the title itself.  As long as this guy is supportive of Keegan and does not have responsibilities that should be his there'll be no problem.  Its encouraging that Clifford himself is the one speaking to Keegan about coming back.  Quite a different situation to Ashley bringing in Keegan and then bringing in Wise afterwards.  I just hope that if they go down this route they make things very clear both to everyone in the club and outside it.

As Garforth have quite a few full time players it is not really surprising. They are now at decent semi-pro level now & are getting battered.

Surprised people are still discussing the South African bid tbh.

as of yet we have no reason not to. the names ruling themselves out of the consortium were never mentioned in the first place as the bloke leading hasn't mentioned any names yet.

as much reason to believe it's cack as to believe it's true as yet.

Didn't he first speak to the Daily Mail about the story claiming "Now is the time to tell the fans who we are" with the paper running off a list of people who was supposed to be involved in the consortium? He wasn't quoted as saying who was involved but it's pretty obvious where they got the names from as that was the paper he went to to break his silence over the bid.

thought it was strange at the time that there were no names in quotes. daily mail journos plucking south african billionaires names from the air because he hasn't told them is as likely him naming them but the journos not quoting him.

Wannabe, get fucked im on a course and everything you cunt!

Being on a course is much different to having an actual job.

How many journalism courses and students are there in the world, and how many jobs are going - much less.
