Street and Campbell were already part of the academy weren't they?

Anyone know much about this Esteban Cardona Lopez?

Not really. "Those first couple of days, they will be nervous about stepping in full-time. But we know the lads; they've been around the Academy for quite a number of years now so it's nothing new to them. The programme won't be any different other than the fact that they'll be full-time."

ah right - I assume before they were still at school BUT it is full time at the academy now

Good luck to them - heard good things about Campbell and Streete, looking forward to see how they develop

Now Esteban Cardona Lopez just sounds like a world class footballer's name.

Without doubt, if he doesn't make it as a world class footballer we have failed him

I think similar things when I see a South American type name playing football in the lower leagues, "How did HE end up there!?" even though I had never heard of him before.

Aye, he's one of those players I didn't mind going to Crawley just for the money after the way he went about setting up his career here. Brilliant story.

Newcastle Res 0 Hamilton 2

By Dan King

Peter Beardsley and Willie Donachie fielded a different team in each half as Newcastle Reserves played against Hamilton in a behind-closed-doors friendly, but United fell to a 2-0 defeat to the Scottish First Division side.

A goal in each half from Accies wideman Jordan Kirkpatrick proved the difference at the club's Benton training centre, with the South Lanarkshire club - relegated from the top flight last season - fielding a virtually full-strength side.

Newcastle, meanwhile, had Yven Moyo making his first appearance since an injury suffered for the Reserves at Manchester United in December, and Tamas Kadar also played his first Magpies match since a hamstring injury at the turn of the year.

Youngsters Ben Sayer, Dan Taylor and Alex Nicholson played in the opening 45 minutes, while teenage goalkeeper Alex Baird, Northern Irish left-back Lee Toland, Academy striker Ryan McGorrigan and first-year scholar Will Turton played in the second period.

An even first half saw Ole Soderberg make a good save from Ali Crawford's well-struck shot before Kadar headed wide from captain Paul Dummett's corner.

On 16 minutes, Kirkpatrick scored after patient build-up from the visitors, before Frenchman Moyo appeared to be fouled in the box but no penalty was given.

Taylor, the under-18s' top scorer last season, and defender Tavernier came close before a completely new XI was introduced for the second half.

Initially, Newcastle were much more threatening after the break, with Joan Edmundsson flashing an effort just across goal and Jeff Henderson flicking inches wide from the Faroe Islander's corner.

But the dangerous Kirkpatrick forced Australian Baird into a smart block at his feet before striking narrowly wide from outside the area, before he did get his second goal shortly after the hour mark. He showed good composure to sidefoot home when a half-cleared cross fell to him 16 yards from goal and continued to threaten with another long-range effort which Baird gathered at the second attempt.

Last season's Barclays Premier Reserve League North golden boot winner, Phil Airey, then sparked into life, curling a shot agonisingly off target and then stabbing just wide after good work down the left by Toland and Ryan Donaldson.

Airey returned the favour to tee up Donaldson a minute later, but his 18-yard effort was saved and only a great diving header off the line from Toland prevented Accies from adding a third.

Teenage centre-back Turton, who had a hugely impressive first appearance at this level, saw his towering header from Donaldson's corner hit the bar with five minutes to play, with Airey unable to snaffle home the rebound, and Michael Richardson saw his 20-yard shot sail just wide.

And with the last kick of the game, an Airey free-kick went too high, with the Reserves next in action at Berwick Rangers on Saturday.

Newcastle United Reserves: First half - Ole Soderberg, Alex Nicholson, Paul Dummett, Tamas Kadar, James Tavernier, Yven Moyo, Brad Inman, Ben Sayer, Conor Newton, Sammy Ameobi, Dan Taylor.

Second half - Alex Baird, Patrick Nzuzi, Lee Toland, Jeff Henderson, Will Turton, Michael Richardson, Greg McDermott, Ryan Donaldson, Joan Edmundsson, Phil Airey, Ryan McGorrigan.

Didn't realise we had that many players.

Expect about 8 of them to feature for the first team this season.

Be good to see Sammy and Kadar etc get a shot, but it's not like our first team squad is particularly small.
