Who do you blame for the mess ?

I blame almost everyone.

Ashley, Shepherd, Llambias, Wise, Souness, Keegan, Kinnear.

All of them have contributed in their own unwitting way.

The buck stops with Ashley though. For all of Shepherds mistakes, he has nothing to do with the naive and idiotic decisions that Ashley made. Especially as it could have, should have, and was looking likely to be a clean slate and a fresh start.

Easy this one its got to be Mike Ashley. Ive defended him plenty on this forum, tried to understand his bizarre decisions and his "vision" but I just cant. He bought the club without doing due dilligence, hasnt put enough money into the playing squad, appointed not one, but three "temporary managers". Put the club in the hands of a casino manager and appointed an ex player with next to no managerial experience as his adviser. But the final straw for me was letting Given and NZogbia during a relegation battle.

There is no way we deserve to stay in the premiership with this reckless owner, imo he shouldnt be allowed to run it whatever the outcome next sunday. He should bring in someone with knowledge and experience like D.Dein, until someone comes up with the cash to fook him off.

Zero investment in the first team over two years + idiotic management structure = relegation scrap.

At the end of the day the person with ultimate accountability is Ashley, he's the one who appointed the chairman, he's the one who appointed the manager and his choice of manager and dof has bought, sold and retained players.

For me he takes the brunt of blame for our impending relegation. Yes others have played their parts and are rightfully the focus of anger from the fans, the previous regime left the club in far from ideal state, the managers have simply not been up to the job, KK left us in it without a thought for anything but himself, the players have  time after time given us spineless performances and have not lived up to their talent and wage packets.

But at the end of the day ultimate accountability lies with Ashley, he's simply been a complete and utter disaster, but I guess it's his company he can do what he likes with it, including running it in the most ridiculously niave way imaginable.

If I had to choose a top 5: Freddy Shepherd, Graeme Souness, Mike Ashley, Kevin Keegan, Michael Owen

Agree with the first three.People seem to forget we would be no where without Keegan.Heading for the old third divison when he took over,2 seasons later 3rd in the premiership.Owens a wanker but there is 10 other players on the pitch

I've never denied that Keegan gave all of this to us, but he's played an instrumental part it taking it all away too. Granted, this is probably an argument that will never be resolved.

As for Owen, when there's a palpable lack of leadership in the changing room driving everyone's morale to the ground, it's quite obviously the money-grabbing useless want-away captain's fault.

I wouldn't include Owen in that, because it's not his fault that he's not that good any more. He didn't make himself captain, or pay himself the ridiculous salary, or decide his transfer fee, or set out to get injured. It was a big mistake to put so many of our financial eggs in his particular basket, but that was Freddy's doing.

The others made mistakes, but the one I'm most angry at is Keegan. He has behaved throughout in a very selfish way, but his standing with the fans has enabled him to portray himself as the victim.

Behaved throughout in a very selfish way....    :crazy2:

Was he being selfish when he warned  Ashley and the fans that the squad wasn't big enough or that  there wasn't enough quality in it.

You are a clown, mate!     :frantic:

Ashley as it is his club and he has oversaw the key appointments that have put us in the position that we are in. Then after that Llambias.

That first statement just doesnt sound right.

Surely its not his club its ours.

He just happens to have paid for a turn at the reins. We were here long before him and will be here long after hes gone.

I blame Freddie Shepherd for this whole mess. He triggered the downfall of this club due to his greedy and ludicrous decisions which have led us into the hands of Ashley.

But in a more short-sighted view I'd have to blame Ashley- there cant be anyone else for this...

Exactly, although we support the club it's not ours, we are merely paying customers, if Ashley wants to run the club into the ground then he's perfectly entitled to do that. Unfortunately for us it's not like supermarkets, if Tesco don't offer what we like, we can't very easily do your weekly shop at Sainsburys, unless of course your name is Lee Stewart :)

It's been 2 years since Shepherd was removed, that's plenty of time for Ashley to deal with the mess. Instead he's made things doubly worse.

Ashley, he got wind of Arab consortiums sniffing about wanting to buy a premiership club, so he dived in and bought us, in a hurry without doing, due dilligence. Thinking he would make a killing off the Arabs,Backfiered big style daft cnut

You could say that, yes. But when Ashley picked the club up we were being strangled with debt and the club in general was in rapid decline. I don't think any of us in our wildest dreams would've imagined the cancer in this club to multiply.

As for the thread, I mean where do you start? I think there's loads of things to blame (owner, chairman, previous chairman, previous previous chairman, previous owner, previous managers, Dennis Wise, current manager, previous players, current players, supporters, coaching staf...) the list is endless.

The real tricky bit is apportioning the blame. The players, as you say, need to take their fair share though - certainly one of the larger chunks. The main blame has to rest with Ashley and Co., though, undoubtedly. I've never believed they inherited a good ship but it has taken gross incompetence to steer us this far off course even from that starting point.

For the overall mess, that's spot on, but if we end up getting relegated I can't look past the players.
