CHARLES SALE: Newcastle owner Mike Ashley dithers over £80m sale to Barry Moat

Last updated at 12:27 AM on 26th October 2009

Mike Ashley's sale of Newcastle reached new farcical levels over the weekend with the owner - having given the impression he would finally accept the reduced offer of £80million from long-time prospective buyer Barry Moat - delaying his decision yet again.

This is the third time in less than two weeks that Ashley had called supposedly definitive meetings having indicated he was prepared to do a deal with Moat. This is despite Moat continually falling short of raising the £100m that Ashley has wanted from the start of this interminable selling process.

Deal or no deal? Don't ask Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley

And sports retail tycoon Ashley, whose Newcastle thinking differs on a daily basis, has made these promises of an imminent sale while at the same time offering caretaker manager Chris Hughton the role on a permanent basis - which wouldn't be in his gift if he sold the club.

To complicate further a mess that the near 44,000 fans who watched Newcastle beat Doncaster on Saturday don't deserve, Geoff Sheard's rival consortium were ruled out of the sale, having failed to place £100m in their lawyers' client account by last Friday's deadline.

Yet the Sheard team claim the money will be in place this week - and no one else has been rejected from this circus.

Bottom line is we are no further forward and still in the same shit sandwich as we were when the whole sale saga started, differance being we are 8k short on the gates and now a championship club.

Well Charles Sale clearly doesn't have a bias

The headline might as well have been "Geoff Sheard is the greatest man ever...oh and Ashley is a t***"

he's half right, I do wonder if our dear friend sillius was in fact charles sale

Moat doesn't have the money. He's dependent on outside backers from the US who we know nothing about, and they would effectively be running the show, not Moat. He who pays the piper calls the tune. It's reasonable to assume they'd be wanting some return on their investment, even if it's just interest rather than profit.

On top of that, it would help the promotion push if Hughton were confirmed in charge and everyone knew where they stood. Some are saying he's not up to it, but we're top of the league despite a bad injury situation.

Time to end all the uncertainty. At least for this season.

How would it end all the uncertainty? Even if Ashley took the club "off the market", everyone knows that he would still sell to the first person who had the money. If anything appointing Houghton would only confirm that he still wants to get rid of the club because in every aspect he is the cheapest and most convenient managerial option available.

The sale will be announced later today.

Not in the know, just the only logical conclusion having weighed up the last years events.

I'm still not convinced Ashley really wants to sell, sadly. This farce has some way to run yet.

I was never convinced he wants to sell, I don't know what he wants, I'd be surprised if he did.  Surely he can't just be happy to have a fifth or more of his wealth tied up purely just to watch and own a crap championship side.  Maybe he's crazier than we give him credit for.
