Been thinking about this for a while.

Has Mike Ashley gone and invested in the wrong club in buying NUFC?

What if he had bought a smaller club with a smaller, "less passionate" fan base, smaller (more manageable) debt, and a lower profile?

Would his methods have worked? Say he went and bought a Blackburn, a Fulham, or a Wigan. How do you think it would have turned out for him?

Yes a knowledge of managers limited to 1995, a bloke he met in a casino as chairman and trying to make a profit with an already small, shit squad would have been faultless elsewhere.

There was never going to be a right club for him to buy, considering the amount he was willing to spend and expected in return.

Think it would have been different if hed bought another side yes

In that scenario he wouldnt have let go* a very popular manager

So the fans wouldnt all turn against him

And supposedly he'd have had more money to invest in the side

The team he bought would have had less injuries & a bigger squad so they could compete

They would have had one manager, all the way through the season

His ideas for investing in young talent would have been positive

etc etc

Yes he made a giant cock up by choosing us. He couldnt handle it.

The problem wasnt his initial ideas but how he reacted to the situations that came about.

The guy has disasterous decision making skills it seems.

rhetorical  question right?

The question is rhetorical yes. What I'm really asking though is, would his business model, systems and actions have worked had he bought a lower profile club?

I personally thought he brought the right club , managed it abysmally.

I thought his continental model could have worked had he employed a european manager with a european director that were willing to work with each other.

Instead he creamed his pants when he first  heard Keegan was available and a completely misguided decision to bring in Wise as a director of football.

He personally said he always went with his gut feeling.  That's his ultimately downfall.  I have no sympathy for the fat tw@t.

The fat twat bought us because he thought he was going to sell us quickly for a £50 - £100million  pound profit. No other reason.

He should have bought Darlo instead.

Hard luck Mike, eh!

How many top flight football teams make a worthwhile profit?

I don't think it was a case of Ashley buying the wrong club, more like Ashley not being suited to owning a football club full stop.

Was just going to say this, he thought of a football club as a rich man's toy and amusement for the weekends. His naivety was staggering.

So no one thinks that his business model could have worked for other clubs? What was Ashley's single biggest mistake? The Keegan debacle? or was it the fact that he let the club play out more than half the season with Hughton and Kinnear in charge? These weren't business mistakes. What hurt Ashley the most as owner of the club was when he started to piss on the fans from a great height thinking he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it.

I think that's what we were saying... they weren't business mistakes, they were 'running a football club' mistakes. He should never have bought a football club.

Obviously if he had bought a club that didn't have any problems to start with, he might have done alright.

if he'd done due dilligence he wouldn't have bought the club. the business model was ok as in "keep the debt within bounds that we can repay without taking on more debt to pay it"....on the football side his appointment of kinnear says it all.

His business model could have worked at other clubs, as it could have here, but he appointed the wrong people and fucked up nearly every decision he ever made.

I agree. But if he'd been the owner at say Fulham, he wouldn't have fallen into the trap of appointing a massive figure like Keegan. Obviously a figure like him brings sentimentality and a rallying of the troops. We're just not a straightforward club, which is why he has failed so miserably, for not recognizing that.

He would have made the same stupid mistakes at a different club, just on a smaller scale.

Is this the same Fulham which at the last count had a debt of around £200m, and a wage bill of £39m with a turnover of £54m?

I'm sure he'd have done a great job there too.

I wasn't saying there were any... just discussing the possibility.

Not trying to move any blame away from Ashley at all, but let's face facts that a less prominent, controversial and troubled club would have been a much easier purchase for him. He might well still have fucked it up, just a thought.
