And there was a further confrontation at the final whistle involving Fabricio Coloccini. The ugly scenes overshadowed an ill-tempered game, settled by Kevin Nolan's second-half goal. And the result means Newcastle go into Saturday's game at Leyton Orient with a 100 per cent pre-season record. Hughton named a strong starting XI – captained by former Huddersfield loanee Steve Harper – for the game, and United, as at Darlington, wore their yellow change strip. As at the Northern Echo Arena, managing director Derek Llambias was in the directors' box. Llambias was sat a few feet away from Kenneth Shepherd, son of former Newcastle chairman Freddy, and his attention will have been drawn to a banner held up in the away end imploring owner Mike Ashley to sell as he was "killing our club". United's first chance fell to Steven Taylor, who had a 14th minute shot blocked from a Joey Barton corner, and Beye sent a follow-up effort high and wide. Andy Carroll shot well wide a minute later as Newcastle started the threaten Alex Smithies' goal after a lethargic start. Clark's side, however, were still looking sharper, proving they were a step up in class from United's first two pre-season opponents, though Harper, despite Huddersfield's possession, was largely untroubled in goal. Xisco should have opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Smithies fumbled a low cross, but the striker was unable to get a proper connection on the loose ball. Jonas Gutierrez put in a teasing low centre in the 40th minute after tearing down the left flank, but the ball just eluded Carroll, and the half ended goalless. Seconds after referee Jonathan Moss blew for the half-time break, Beye and Clarke had to be pulled apart by team-mates, coaching staff and stewards as they angrily confronted each other, the incident appearing to stem from an earlier free kick. Beye, not surprisingly, was substituted at the break, and the defender watched the second half from the directors' box. Gutierrez, Xisco and Taylor also made way, and Joey Barton left the field just before the half mark, patting the Newcastle badge on his shirt as he applauded the away end. Barton's replacement, Alan Smith, was loudly booed by Huddersfield's fans for his Leeds United roots. A few minutes earlier, Smithies had pulled off a fine save from Shola Ameobi, forcing the ball away for a corner. Smithies then denied Coloccini from the flag kick, tipping his dipping shot over the crossbar. However, the highly-rated goalkeeper was picking the ball out of his net in the 68th minute after substitute Nolan latched on to a long ball and coolly beat Smithies to make it 1-0 to United. Teenager Samuel Adjei – who joined Newcastle in January from Sweden – made it on to the pitch for his first-team debut in the 73rd minute. Smith then became a marked man after fouling Robbie Simpson, for which he was given a talking to by Moss. Hughton made sure the players acknowledged the travelling support after the final whistle, which had briefly led to another confrontation, this time involving Coloccini. We played decent, defence played well, Barton/Guthrie weren't bad and Duff was quite good when he came on. Left before the second one ...As for the first incident I'm not sure why but Beye was going mental...he was charging around trying to start on whoever pissed him off...Smith's tackle was pretty bad..came in from behind and cleared the player out and just started laughing at the ref who decided it wasn't even a yellow Edit:And there was a Sunderland fan in the Huddersfield end getting abused.
