Vinny Green Balls
I grew up worshipping Kevin Keegan. Was easily one of my favorite players. And when he went to manage Newcastle, there was really no question in my mind which club I was going to support. Witnessing those Keegan years, how the hell could I support anybody else now? And apparently, I like also-rans. Most sporting teams I support range from mediocre to horseshit with the occasional glory thrown into the mix. buzza
From Berwick, so the closest "big" team is Newcastle (can't go north as we ARE English - Rest of you= Suthen Puffs), lived in Newcastle from 16 to 18 and that's when I really started to support.. :'(
Village Idiot
I need to balance out my karma while supporting Barça. You should support Accrington Stanley, then. Our success is a quite recent thing, more than 50% of our trophies have been won in the past 20 years actually - after Cruyff took over. Talking a bit more seriously Shearer was one of my favorite players when I started following the PL in the 90s. But I didn't really take to the team until I found this place. Not a really convincing reason, but NUFC are certainly my favorite English team. I sort of bought on the deluded Geordies media image (shame on me), and found out it to be very untrue. vicente_14
I was born in London and have spent my life in London, my Mum and her family are all Geordies, from Walker, Wallsend & Byker, and i used to spend every holiday as a youngster in Newcastle with family, the long summer evenings in Spanish City! The first game i recall going to at St James' Park was a friendly against Sporting Lisbon where Lee Clark excelled and quickly became my fave player, that was the season we blew the then Division One away, i was fortunate to get to many of the games that season. Most of my pals are Chelsea season ticket holders but family ties meant my team is Newcastle, had all the kits when i was little, always the odd one out around my way. Guest hydeous
Saw a beautiful big fold out poster of the 'Toon Army' in an Indian sports magazine (sportsstar) at my cousin's place when I was very little. I think it was '94. Before Shearer. I don't remember the poster very well though. Just remember a bunch of happy looking players and Keegan. When we finally got cable at home and my football team mates at school were all following Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal, I must've decided my life wasn't complicated enough and told everyone I followed Newcastle United. This was 2002 I think and we'd finished 3rd? Anyway, good times. Seems like such a long time ago now.

Swissmag
for me it started 95 when Hottiger joined. There were tv programmes about the club and I still ask myself how you can not fall in love with the entertainers

Kanji
Shearer, saw him on the tube pre Newcastle days, then Euro 96 was on ESPN here in America, was 100% sold, Newcastle love immediately fell in and there was no turning back for me, even as depressed and insanely negative I am, still the love doesn't falter. Mind you I should have been a Liverpool, Leicester supporter growing up as my uncle and brother tried to brainwash me. My father and his family grew up in Leicester/London so its a wonder how I was allowed to walk around with a Toon top in our humble home in Florida. Simply put though, will always be Shearer. He's the reason I fell in love with football, stayed in love with football, and will always love football. Wow, I didn't even remember posting this. Me, negative? Ridiculous - I must have been on some weird mood then, I'm incredibly f***ing positive The real question on everyone's lips is, what do you open minded people think of altidore? I've said it before and I'll say it again - as much as I want him to be scoring for fun in the World Cup - he only means something to me when he's wearing the USA shirt. Other than that, he's just another Mackem player I despise. If I'm speaking selfishly (and totally hypothetically), I'd love for him to put in 20 goals for Sunderland, with Sunderland losing every single one of those matches and for him to have a mare or not even play against us. That's me sorted, he'll get a move elsewhere, he'll be in good form for the national setup and Sunderland will still lose.
DJ_NUFC
Grew up in Kampala, Uganda, and attended a British primary school. Every cunt around me supported Man U, and I had just got interested in footie at the time. This was 1995. Keegan's entertainers were... entertaining on a weekly basis. What really attracted me to the toon was not just the play and the team, but the fact that people that I absolutely hated supported Man U, and this was a way to not be cuntish in any way or form. It's served me well over the years, all the heartache and downs have simply made me love the club even more. To answer someone else's question posed earlier in the thread, I've taken quite a bit of interest in the area, albeit never, ever visited (my financial and personal realities have not permitted thus far), but have known people from the area and have made me want to visit even more. I hope to finally go to my first Newcastle game next year, August.

Mike
As has been mentioned once or twice. I'm a re-educated (brief! Brief, you rat motherfuckers.) Liverpool fan. After that CL, they were my team and I didn't think much of it until I heard about some sort of controversy about them not being allowed back into the CL because of their league position. That was when I decided to look up what the CL actually was. Upon realizing I'd picked a team that just won the biggest trophy that a team can win, I backed off and decided to let a team find me. Next season rolls around and I see a lot of games from the big clubs, and sprinkled in there are fair share of Spurs and NUFC games. I whittled the candidates down to NUFC and Spurs, figuring I would simply support the worse team, so that I could feel like I was there for the entire trip to the top (ahahahahhaa haaa). At the time, Spurs...iirc seemed like a young, promising team. Whereas Newcastle....well. It was 2005, you were all there. I don't need to say anything. The only thing that stood out was Shearer. I'm not romanticizing this shit, but there was something about him that reminded me so much of Patrick Ewing (my Shearer equivalent) that I was immediately biased towards your team. That September you were playing a game vs Fulham, and I was just watching it, you know, as a casual. Really leaning towards your team and all that but still not really calling myself a fan or whatever until Zoggy hit this late FK goal to tie it up. He hit it from the same spot HBA likes to cut in and it just spun into the net. I was on my feet before I realized the shit, and I've been in ever since. Found the board like a year later, because I had no idea where else to go to learn about the team. Now Spurs are awesome and I get called a Scouser. It worked out like I expected, tbh. Kanji
Every team I support tends to have this "we COULD be..." and generally all have some sort of bad/negative press connotation be it the owners, coach/manager, fans, etc. Its sort of fitting. I'm sure you could do a study on people's personalities based on the sport teams they support (and more so on folks like myself who are not Geordies yet have done enough reading, research, and following as much as humanly possible these days...). Not a day goes by I don't check these boards, read articles, check the twitter feed(s).... the days are ruined when we lose, and the days are pure joy when we win - this club is on the exact same level as my Tampa Bay Buccaneers (home town NFL team) and It'll always be this way for me. I guess to a greater extent this board, N-O, probably is the main contributing factor as to why I love this club so much -- people ask why NUFC, I can tell them millions of reasons...players past and present, certain results, certain performances or goals - but can't ever really explain how awesome this board is and how great it is to have it when you are all the way in Florida supporting this team every single day.
