NEWCASTLE United club captain Nicky Butt could be the next big name to quit the Magpies after Obefami Martins last night signed for Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg.

The Chronicle understands that the former Manchester United and England star has grown disillusioned with the life at St James’s Park and is concerned by the impending mass exodus on Tyneside.

A United insider said today: “Nicky is considering his options at the moment.”

With Habib Beye already handing in a written transfer request, Butt may be about to follow suit, with first- team players such as Sebastien Bassong, a target of Tottenham Hotspur, looking to follow Martins out of the exit doors at Gallowgate.

Butt signed a new one-year contract in January under Joe Kinnear when United looked as though they were capable of fending off the threat of relegation.

However, life at St James’s has deteriorated since then.

And by the time the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month, Newcastle could be left with a squad full of youngsters and fringe players, with caretaker boss Chris Hughton powerless in the transfer market. That would make the challenge of trying to win promotion at the first attempt extremely difficult for the Magpies, who are already facing an uphill struggle.

Butt has missed the last three friendlies due to a hand injury sustained at League Two Darlington, and the Chronicle revealed last night that he was thought to be unhappy after being told to drive to Manchester alone to see a specialist.

Butt will be absent for the trip to face Dundee United tomorrow, as will Beye.

Looks like not only did Butt injure his hand, he must have took a serious blow to the head as well  :cheesy:

Butt has two options

Pull his finger out

or retire

He has a third option:

continue stumbling around the pitch at a leisurely pace for Newcastle for a very high salary.

I think he'll stick with this option personally (just a hunch).

"I'm going to do it everyone, I'll leave you know! Don't try and stop me..."

"Don't worry, we won't"

"Don't think I'm bluffing. I will actually leave"

"Aye, t'ra then. Door's that way, we've already sent someone ahead to start the car for you"

Congratulations to you all. It took 6 years, and alot of hard work, but you managed it.

Managed to dismantle and destroy everything that the late great Sir Bobby Robson worked so hard to build.

You are all to blame and should hang your heads in shame. I hope you're happy now.

What an utter load of tosh haveing KK in there. You could argue that when he took over from Bg sam he saved us from a relegation.

But dont let facts get in your way.

He'd walk this league, so he would be a loss.

There are far better Championship players then him, there are players out there who would play for a quarter of his wage who are better players, he wouldn't be a loss in the slightest, it would be a large gain to get rid of that tosser.

Ah right, seen it.

Hmm... can't say i agree wholeheartedly.

In terms of blame i'd say:

1. Mike Ashley

2. Derek Llambias

3. Joe Kinnear

4. Kevin Keegan

5. Freddy Shepherd

6. Graeme Souness

Roeder/Allardyce didn't really have owt to do with it. Just really nothingish eras.
