The Chronicle understands that the former Manchester United and England star has grown disillusioned with the life at St James’s Park and is concerned by the impending mass exodus on Tyneside. A United insider said today: “Nicky is considering his options at the moment.” With Habib Beye already handing in a written transfer request, Butt may be about to follow suit, with first- team players such as Sebastien Bassong, a target of Tottenham Hotspur, looking to follow Martins out of the exit doors at Gallowgate. Butt signed a new one-year contract in January under Joe Kinnear when United looked as though they were capable of fending off the threat of relegation. However, life at St James’s has deteriorated since then. And by the time the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month, Newcastle could be left with a squad full of youngsters and fringe players, with caretaker boss Chris Hughton powerless in the transfer market. That would make the challenge of trying to win promotion at the first attempt extremely difficult for the Magpies, who are already facing an uphill struggle. Butt has missed the last three friendlies due to a hand injury sustained at League Two Darlington, and the Chronicle revealed last night that he was thought to be unhappy after being told to drive to Manchester alone to see a specialist. Butt will be absent for the trip to face Dundee United tomorrow, as will Beye. Managed to dismantle and destroy everything that the late great Sir Bobby Robson worked so hard to build. You are all to blame and should hang your heads in shame. I hope you're happy now.
