ponsaelius
People say it's easy for players to play past 32 if the technique is there. In theory that's okay but it's amazing what percentage of players go really shit once they hit that stage.
Disco
As I understand it, the reduced wage, 2 year contract would come into effect after his current contract ends in Summer 2012 so effectively he would have 3 years from the end of this season. He's 28 now (29 in September) so the new contract will end when he's 31 (3 months off 32). I wouldn't offer him a longer contract than that. I stand by what I said above in February. If he really is demanding a 4 year contract then sell him in the Summer. There aren't many players over 32 who can still cut it at Premiership level. Absolute bollocks that like. Good of you to back that up. Lets have a list (which does not include goalkeepers) of players over 32 who are still playing well for their teams. I'll start you off with Ryan Giggs. Very generous of you... Off the top of my head Lampard, Drogba, Anelka, Carvalho (albeit now moved), Rio Ferdinand, Kevin Davies, Vieira all cut it at the top level. Peter Beardsley, Alan Shearer, Nobby Solano too if you want some examples from us. As Sewelly says age isn't a factor if the technique is still there. Barton even at the very peak of his powers isn't in the same class as those you've named.

ponsaelius
For example we've had a lot of players with good technique (better than Barton's) who've turned out to be total shite once they hit the 30s.

Well half those players weren't in the Premiership for a start. Premiership games are played at a much faster pace than the Italian and Spanish leagues. Elliottman
So it seems as though its the 4 years that are preventing this from happening. Id imagine this would be resolved.

Willow
Only just found out about this, pretty disappointing to be honest. He won't stay for another year if they're not offering anything now. He's guaranteed to leave this summer now, with all the reported interest in him. I'm sure there's more to this story but......well, if they can replace him with something better than it may be acceptable. Otherwise, bit of a disaster Only time will tell.. Disco
Anyone fancy describing what Barton's current game is? Make a 3rd man in central midfield when we're being overrun but at the same time try to dictate the play from a wide rightish position with Simpson doing his forward running at times for him. Generally being an option for the knocked off ball on that side of play too whip a cross in from deep. Hard to pick anyone who plays like him, or indeed like our midfield but for some reason it works.

Guest johnson293
Just read this McKay said: "I must say that, to be fair to Newcastle and the current Board, they stuck by Joey. I think he repaid them last season - I think he had a great season. But they stuck by him, there's no doubt about that, Derek Llambias especially." Doesn't really sound like they have fallen out, more just a contract disagreement, this isn't the last we will hear of it thats for sure. Hmm, if thats the case, what has happened to cause this... McKay (Barton's agent) on BBC Newcastle. “Only way Joey will stay at #Nufc (beyond present contract), I think, is if there are new owners."

Guest sicko2ndbest
Tbh we can sit this one out He needs to play well in order to attract another club He will be 30 at the end of the season and we will have had his best years Win win He is not that good. Those people saying look at his assists! Most of them cane from hung balls that Carroll attacked or set pieces. His tenacity and ability to keep the ball is what we may miss but I'm sur he can be replaced
