Guest Haris Vuckic
Woodgate was probably the best centre back we've had since I can remember. How's that embarrassing?
Ronaldo
fucking hell man, Woodgate is a drunken cunt of a human being who had 1 1/2 good seasons with us. You'd think he was Paulo fucking Maldini with 15 years in black and white. Taylor shouldn't be trying to emulate anyone, make your own career without that stupid bastard as a template. Guest Haris Vuckic
Still Woodgate would have been a good mentor for Taylor at the time and I can imagine he was told to pay attention to Woodgate by Robson. If Taylor turns out to be as good as Woodgate but half the cunt then we have struck gold.
Village Idiot
Cruyff I think. Yep, that. He only used it sparingly when he was with us (Spanish league enforced a 1-11 starting lineup), but it became attached to him nonetheless. Since then, it has only been worn by his son Jordi, Ammunike (don't laugh), Ezquerro (who ended dropping it for 17), Gerard and Henry. Bar Cruyff himself, everybody up to Henry have been notorious flops, so the talk was that the shirt was cursed.
Village Idiot
Jonathan Woodgate made a complete joke of Didier Drogba, how many people can say that? I understand that he didn't get a good run in your team, but he is still immense if by any odd chance he manages to stay fit.

What, you mean he did his job and stopped him scoring? Taylor and Bramble to name two.....
Guest Haris Vuckic
I hear King and Woodgate have wheelchair races at Spurs. Woodgate wins as he keeps chasing the white lines...
Village Idiot
I remember watching the UEFA semifinal between OM and Newcastle, and Woodgate turning Drogba into a whole pile of nothing. Of course I didn't watch the other leg, where I think you got spanked, and maybe he was dire there... Really, I was pissed off when he signed for Real (although his tenure there was truely dreadful)
Slugsy
Woodgate is the best defender I've seen at this club in 28 years of supporting NUFC. Shambles of a injury record and from all accounts which I personally have never verified, his personality is a little off but talent wise, light years ahead of anything else I've seen here. Really, I was pissed off when he signed for Real (although his tenure there was truely dreadful) Drogba destroyed us in the second leg (minus Woodgate) and hit the post twice in the first Drogba was still developing into a great player then tbh, Woodgate did well that night but making 'a complete joke' of Drogba is a daft statement. Everyone at SJP saw what a dangerous player he was that night. In fact, before the game at the Veledrome people were wishfully talking about us buying him in the summer, hardly corresponds with your assertion. Ronaldo
fair play mate
Slugsy
I don't think your memory is fuzzy at all, maybe 'joke' was strong but Woodgate had the best striker in Europe in his pocket that night, Drogba was on fire that season and Woodgate gave a masterclass of a performance. Ronaldo
Drogba wasn't the best striker in europe back then man, don't be so daft (he is now imo). It was a good performance but again 'back pocket' is an exagerration based on the fact that the Ivorian didn't score.
Slugsy
I disagree, Woodgate was brilliant that night, Drogba's performances that season earned him the move to Chelsea, he was brilliant that season.
Ronaldo
He was brilliant but nowhere near the finished article, even at
Guest Haris Vuckic
Either way I doubt Woodgate should have to rely on one performance to prove his class.

Of course I didn't watch the other leg, where I think you got spanked, and maybe he was dire there... He got injured in a 2-1 win against Chelsea prior to the second leg so didn't play. If we'd had Woodgate and Bellamy for that match we'd have gone through.
Tooj
I remember a spell in a couple of weeks around that time when we faced Man Utd, Arsenal and Marseillie and drew with each team. Woodgate was outstanding in all games as Drogba, Van Nistelrooy and Henry were all extremely quiet in each game.

Tooj
Really? Fucking hell always remembered them as being close to each other. An advert as to why not to take drugs I guess. Was 0-0 though aye?

The Man U game was just after christmas Daft thing was we kept a clean sheet at Old Trafford in January and at home to Arsenal in April and the only one in between was a fairly pointless return leg in Mallorca where we already led 4-1 and they played the reserves. Another game where Woodgate was outstanding was away at Villa after O'Brien got sent off, although that was against a much shitter strike force. Cajun
Woodgate was immense for us pretty much every game he played (I do have a vague memory of him and given having a comedy moment against wolves?). He was class though and I don't think its that strange a young lad will have been impressed enough to want to take his number (didn't taylor also mention Albert?). How old was he when he changed from 38?
