Never heard of a game beging stopped due to an injury. Hayes should get the points as Gateshead were at a disadvantage with 10 men and they called it off.

If its replayed it sets a dangerous precedent.

And fans. Why should they have to fork out for the long trip again when the game could easily have been completed there and then. Infact Gateshead should have to compensate the fans for this one.

No-win situation this one, really. I can see why the Heed players would be traumatised and not up to playing, but the opposition shouldn't be forced to travel and play again.

Hopefully Gateshead can just give the three points to the opposition and not be docked additional points for refusing to play. Maybe common sense will prevail for once.

Hayes & Yeading have been given the three-points. Gateshead are appealing.

If those quotes from the Chairman & Kris Gate are true, then that's a shocking decision.

Gateshead stunned by yet another bad break

Sep 17 2009 by Jeff Bowron, Evening Chronicle

GATESHEAD boss Ian Bogie has branded the decision to hand Hayes and Yeading United all three points for the recent abandoned game at the International Stadium as ‘diabolical.’

The Blue Square Premier clash on September 5 was goalless with 14 minutes left when there was a 40-minute hold up due to a serious injury to the Tynesiders’ Martin Brittain.

Brittain broke his tibia and fibula and was finally taken to hospital by ambulance with the game abandoned around 5:30.

Hayes and Yeading boss Garry Haylock claimed it was 10-man Gateshead’s refusal to restart the game which forced the abandonment, rather than Brittain’s serious injury.

And that claim has been backed up the Football Conference, with Gateshead subsequently charged on rule 8.3 for ‘failing to fulfil a fixture.’

Instead of a rematch, or letting the score at the time stand, the Londoners have been awarded a victory.

Gateshead have put in an appeal against the decision.

Bogie said: “In the circumstances of what took place that afternoon, it is a diabolical decision to hand all three points to Hayes and Yeading.

“We were not losing at the time and we did not refuse to go back on.

“The referee never came to our dressing room or buzzed for the players to go back on the pitch.

“I was stunned by Garry Haylock’s comments at the time and am dumbfounded by this decision.”

Gateshead captain Kris Gate backed up his manager’s words, and insists his side would have gone back to finish the game if they had been told to do so.

He said: “We were never asked to go back on.

“We were not in the right frame of mind, but if we were going to be blamed for the abandonment and the points given to Hayes and Yeading we would have been out there.”

Gateshead chairman Graham Wood blames a misunderstanding for the controversy.

Wood said: “Assistant manager Jeff Wrightson and secretary Mike Coulson were told by referee Andy Madley he would take into account the situation and people’s opinions.

“Crucially, the referee stated he would make the final decision, which is at odds with the claim we refused to go back on after the long lay-off.

“In our opinion it was inappropriate to restart the game as the players had been badly affected by the seriousness of the injury to Martin Brittain.

“We have been unintentionally misled by the referee and both myself and the Hayes chairman agreed at the time a draw would be the fairest outcome.”

The board of the Football Conference will now either rubber-stamp the original decision or come up with another alternative.

Was it completely beyond the Gateshead manager or anybody involved with the team to go and see the referee and ask what was going on?

Don't believe they would be allowed to until the game had officially ended. Might be wrong though.

The Football Conference have charged Gateshead FC with a breach of Rule 8.6 - "failing to fulfil an engagement", following the abandonment of the Blue square Premier fixture against Hayes & Yeading United last month.

Gateshead chairman Graham Wood, secretary Mike Coulson, manager Ian Bogie and assistant manager Jeff Wrightson travelled by train for the hearing at Conference headquarters in Birmingham.

A Panel of independent members of the conference found the charge proved and made the following decisions:-.

1. Gateshead FC was found guilty of "failure to fulfil an engagement" by being responsible for the above match being abandoned by the referee.

2. The result of the match at the time, 0-0, is to stand with each side picking up a point.

3. Gateshead FC however is deducted one point, in accordance with Rule 8.6.

4. The club has also received a fine of £2,500 - suspended until Gateshead's final match in the Football Conference this season, 2009/10, subject to a similar breach of Rule not being repeated.

* Gateshead Football Club has the right of Appeal in accordance with Rule 17.4 within 14 days from the date of the written notice of this decision.

As it now stands following the outcome of the hearing, Gateshead still have nine points - but now from 15 games rather than 14.

Given that Hayes & Yeading will now just get 1 point rather than 3 and are a relegation rival, I think Gateshead should be pretty pleased with that outcome.

Love the way the journalist thought it was important to state their method of transport ;D

Would have been loads better if they had travelled by National Express Coach.

Congratulations on staying up.  :clap2:

Hopefully with turning pro this summer and their new stadium coming the year after they can push on and get back in the Football League soon.

I think this season was all about survival. Remember seeing an interview with the owner saying at full potential Gateshead could eventually be a club which floats between Leagues One and Two. Seems ambitious, and luckily for them not in the George Reynolds sense.
