The patchy number nine - reflecting on Oba's time at Newcastle

Martins is a funny player, can't quite decide whether he looked thick because he is or because of the way he was deployed but watch his latest goal for Wolfsburg, he made a very intelligent run and looked lightning. He's doing ok for them, not started a lot but still got 5 in 9, which ain't half bad for someone that's been a sub mostly.

Very limited and inconsistent player. Had shit service for much of the time here but was very unreliable. Not much of a team player and frequently fucked things up for us on the break.

Astonished we got our money back for him because he's not a very good footballer to be honest. He'll score the odd fantastic goal but his skill level is minute.

just seen that, both the mainz goals were perfectly timed runs in behind the last defender and a good finish applied. he did score some like that here but not nearly enough as he should've.

Hmm dunno, his skill and technique much like his shooting was incredibly varied, times he would dribble really well and show great close control, other times it was like he'd never kicked a ball.

His incredible right foot was incredible. His weaker left foot was still a potent weapon in the fight against opposition defences. If he had good coaching perhaps he could learn to use his left and right legs in coordination with each other which would lead to movement on the pitch and then we could see his pace.

Age caught up with him at Newcastle.  :iamatwat:

When did you become such a shit poster Niel? You used to offer something resembling insight.

Cull your aggressive tone young man, think of how your role models would view this attack on a benign poster. It's a fucking disgrace.

Where do you start with Martins.  Had the velvety touch of a rapist for one.  Passing was consistent as most would end up as a pin point pass to the opposition.  Was as fast as fuck, but one of the most static forwards I have ever seen.  Would never be pulling defenders around and making incisive runs for someone to at least try a through-ball for but spent most of his time looking like he was marking his defender then the other way around.  Scored a few super-strikes - missed more six yard sitters though.

Aye, think that summed up his time here - whether that was through coaching or his own limitations though is another thing.  Although the basics of being able to pass are more down to the player.

I still cant believe he missed that chance away at Spurs from about 3 yards out.

Regarding last season. In any other situation he shouldn't have played. He was carrying an injury and was desperately short of confidence. I remember watching him step up to take the penalty against Arsenal and I just knew he was going to miss, he bottled it as soon he was given the ball.

The problem was he was the only player that even vaguely looked creative going forward which meant there was an over reliance on him. Given the problems above and the fact he was hardly consistent at the best of times it's obvious to see how it ended in disaster.

His touch on the ball was terrible, but a player of that strength and pace is always going to be useful at a certain level and in certain situations.

I don't think he made the best of himself though. In his head, he was Pele.

He was fleet of foot but slow in the head which meant we didn't see his speed. His first touch was shocking and his finishing? Well, that was piss poor too. He was also very injury prone, something which got swept over because Owen was slightly worse.

In the number 9 stakes he gets a 4/10.

This - he's gone, I'm not sorry and he's unlamented by all NUFC fans who HAVE seen decent CFs.

Will be interested to see how he does in his SECOND season with the Germans.
